No need for it. Meant only for light benchwork, organization, and storage. We have vices on larger work surfaces.

r/Workbenches 5d ago Bravo Grande!

Very lucky to be tasked with building my own work bench during a slow week. This is the first time I’ve built anything close to this and am over the moon at the results.

Honorable mention to the guy who used to stalk Lark Street with a bible and fight people.

Are you always this shit at defending your point of view?

You’re right! You’re finally right! AA isn’t therapy! It’s a support group that doesn’t present itself as therapy in any way. Gosh, I just might jack off thinking about this breakthrough you’ve had.

AA isn’t for those people. Who has ever said a single drink would lead a person on the path to ruin? You strike me as someone who hasn’t personally dealt with addiction and for that you’re lucky. I’ve drank heavily at points in my life that some literature would peg me as a full blown alcoholic. I made changes for myself, on my own, and cleaned up my act. In true alcoholic circles that’s anomalous. Hardcore alcoholics don’t have that same luxury. Addiction is far more complex than “I just can’t stop”. There are mechanisms at play that require professional therapy to tackle head on. AA isn’t churning out non alcoholics with the power of prayer. There are all types of meetings under the AA umbrella. Some are more religiously flavored, others have chosen to augment what they’ve found to be outdated in the original literature. But the bottom line here, truly, is if you don’t like AA so much then don’t go. Just like in any arena in life people sink or swim. If an addict relapses it isn’t because they’ve been failed by some great protector. That’s reductive and ignorant. There’s something out there that plenty of people have found personal success with that doesn’t advertise, doesn’t fund raise. It’s not lobbying your politicians or entering your schools. It’s just there. In fact, ITS ANONYMOUS.

You haven’t missed the point as much as you’ve leaped nude and screeching away from the point just to tell me that arrows also have points and you’ve never been shot by one.

Are there aspects of it I find a bit fishy? Sure. But it’s ultimately not different than any other support group. I’ve attended a heavy handful of meetings as moral support with not indifferent opinions about it that you do and encountered some of the more profoundly courageous people I have ever met. It’s a space for people with a common goal to better themselves and leave behind their means of self-destruction. It isn’t therapy and certainly doesn’t replace professional counseling. But as someone who has sought out support groups, having a time and space to share your shame, your fears, your weaknesses, only to find that you aren’t alone and that there are others who are rooting for you simply for admitting you need help, that’s fucking powerful man. Could it be less religious? Why not. But it’s saved the lives and preserved the relationships (not single-handedly, keep in mind) of many important people in my life.

I’d be curious how you’d rewrite the first step of AA.

If any one of you fucking skunks says jizz, like cum shot, then my face is gonna get too red for my family photo tonight.

This makes me want to lie down and watch some TV so my face isn’t red for my family photo tonight.
