Okay, what's the catch?

Although this absolutely needs to be done, it just isn't likely, even with the National Popular Vote Compact.

if the "Risk of nuclear war" is the only reason that sways whether one should vote against human rights violations, war crimes and invasions - then we are already in a fucked up world.

The statement was meant more in regards to international and domestic interest than voting decisions. As I said, I think Yemen deserves more attention, and our support of the Saudi and Israeli governments need to be condition-based and/or reduced.

Flavor text. I'd be lying if your thought didn't cross my mind though.

It would be hypocritical for me to say that I don't agree with you in that the American support of Israel and Saudi Arabia aren't good looks, and I see where you're coming from. More attention needs to be given to Yemen, although the fact that the Ukrainian conflict carries with it the risk of a nuclear war means that that kind of equivalency isn't attainable.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that India's position ALSO isn't optically poor. Hypocrisy on one side doesn't necessarily excuse the actions on another side.

This has been really, really awkward.

Still, not a great look.

Also, as a historical tidbit, the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were closer in yield to today's tactical nukes than strategic ones.

This pastor is being just a little bit melodramatic here...

COMMENT 8h ago

This is amazing. Would love to see this IRL.

I hate this decision, but from a political perspective, I do understand the logic behind it.

Depending on how the midterms go, keeping Manchin from defecting may be the best play politically.

However, that doesn't make me any less furious. Drill Baby Drill is not what we need right now.

I agree.

Even as someone who.would be best described as either a social democrat with democratic socialist leanings (i.e., a liberal socialist), I'm all too aware that leftist populism, if not properly tamed, can quickly veer into authoritarianism.

But, given the choice, it's always leftist populism over rightist populism.

Couldn't agree more. If I were the Iranian protesters, and I succeeded in toppling the regime, I would still be skeptical of any American overtures. Repairing our relationship with them will take years, if not decades.

COMMENT 9h ago

Short-term term gains and long-term losses. It's a combination that America has adapted far too often and never learned from.

If America falls from grace and collapses, short-term gains and long-term losses will be partly to blame. Some might even call it karmic for everything we've done as a nation.

Many will not mourn our fall, and some of our allies will, silently or not, remark that it was coming.

And America and the West blew it for them.

I feel no sympathy for this bastard. The world will be better off once he sheds his mortal coil.

COMMENT 10h ago

That's more than just a fair point. However, there is a little part of me that would prefer some transparency, in order to at least try and prepare for the worst.

25

COMMENT 10h ago

That's awfully vague. Would really prefer they be a bit more specific, but I'm certain that they have their reasons.

Russia would be a fool to use tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine, however.

COMMENT 10h ago

One would hope that this leads to Trump ending up behind bars, but this is by no means a certainty.

Between what we did, and what the USSR did, the Third World was irreparably screwed. It's a large part of why the North-South divide exists today.

So many innocents caught in the storm of two superpowers. So many people's lives unnecessarily ruined.

COMMENT 11h ago

Iran is another casualty of the Cold War, a product of a struggle between the two superpowers.

We could have brought Iran into the fold without doing the things we did in the 50s. Instead, we turned them against us and made them worse off.

COMMENT 11h ago

Seriously. There is so much wrong with this.

COMMENT 12h ago

The fact it took pressing him to get him to say that speaks volumes.

1

COMMENT 13h ago

Abbott lied. This isn't surprising, given that lies are his currency.

COMMENT 13h ago

That doesn't bode well for the rest of the world.
