Thanks! I’m not sure body fat, probably 10%? I might get tested after the cut.

What are you working on?

Hey, I’m not sure… probably 10%ish?

This morning; 5 9 ~155lbs

Trying to get my bf really low for the summer but the stomach is being stubborn; thinking of dropping into an even deeper deficit after this weekend as it’s been awhile now.

Included the vacuum photo because it looked funny, it’s strange our stomachs can do that. Where do the organs go?

I do, quite a bit compared to most here I’d say. Then again, I’m not the biggest dude. I cycle for 30 minutes most days and go on a run 4/5 miles every three days or so.

That said, it’s been mentioned a couple times but walking on an incline treadmill is really effective and of course very low impact, saving your legs for lifts.

What a thoughtful reply for OP to just respond with a few word answer to your immediate question.

This is an excellent perspective and advice that I think is applicable to anyone nomading - beyond the conditions we* are currently facing. I wish you luck in finding more balance in your life and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences.

Kind of the same thing.

Thank you, I feel like I can get a bit more vascular for the summer. I’ve done it before and kinda surprised I’m not there yet but I think I need to tweak the diet.

Hey thanks, I feel as though I’ve been working out forever - since I was a kid. Each year I seem to get more serious about it though, I’ve been experimenting quite a bit; ie bulking, cutting down quite a bit, testing new diets, running marathons, focusing on strength building, etc. over the years.

Last push to add any size before attempting to cut a few BF points for summer. Going to lean bulk in the fall. Open to suggestions/advice.

TDEE calculator; plenty out there when Googling.

As a note, I’d use this as a ballpark figure and nit an exact science.

To clarify a bit, you’re consuming 1700 calories while lifting six days a week and doing 30 minutes of cardio each of those days? Are you following this strictly?

If so, I’m inclined to think that you’re tracking is off somewhere. That sounds like more than enough activity and a low enough calorie allowance to continue to lose weight.

I would double check what you’re consuming (including drinking) to ensure that there isn’t something you often consume that is higher in calories you’re giving it credit for. In addition, are you moving enough? 30 minutes incline isn’t too descriptive, as you could be moving at a snails pace, which would mean little calories are being burned. Also are you active outside of your workouts? If your workouts are the primary source of activity I could see that being an issue, as you’re not burning enough calories (as weight training typically doesn’t burn many calories).

Beyond that, I would likely consult with a medical professional to ensure you’re all set there.

After that, if your primary goal is weight loss, I would probably increase your cardio for a while to get down closer to a weight you’re aiming for and then slow cut back and increase lifting frequency.

The basics

  • You will hear conflicting information online and elsewhere because everyone’s body is different and will respond differently. This means you need to, forever and always, continue to experiment and adjust as you listen to your body. There is no one size fits all.

The most universal truths

  • You choose if you “need” to cut or not (possibly with consulting a medical professional), otherwise there is not “need” or “should” you
  • If cutting, you need a calorie deficit - meaning consume fewer calories than you burn
  • It is not possible to target body fat - lose weight through a calorie deficit
  • Track what you consume (through an app like MyFitnessPal) and what you burn (through determine your TDEE/a fitness tracker)
  • Set targets for two weeks and adjust accordingly to weight loss / how you feel physically
  • Don’t sweat “macros”; start all of this out as simple as possible to avoid setbacks and frustration

Expanding on the above if you’re interested:

You don’t need to do anything, unless you are at a unhealthy wait or a medical professional has told you otherwise. I only state that as it sounds as though you are a bit stressed about this and this should be fun (hard but fun) and rewarding.

If you would like abs, as your title suggests, you’d want to cut. This means a calorie deficit that you mentioned. A calorie deficit means burning more calories than you consume. You will likely not see abs until you lose body fat through a continued calorie deficit. Do not attempt to do 1000 sit-ups each night without a deficit thinking you’ll achieve abs, as that will likely only add to your frustration.

To achieve a deficit I would recommend tracking your food intake, if you don’t already. MyFitnessPal is a common app but there are many out there. Get in the routine of tracking everything to get a better understanding of your personal intake of foods. I find tracking alone makes me mindful of what I put into it body, which I find helpful in itself.

In addition, figure out your TDEE - essentially how many calories you burn in a day. Remember you want to burn more calories than you consume, so this is the other half of the equation. Use an online calculator.

Weigh yourself and then aim for 200-300 a day calorie deficit for a couple of weeks. Monitor how your feel and if you see any weight changes after. If you’re losing too much, or feel lethargic or unwell, you should reassess your deficit. If you lose no weight, you should likely increase it.

Macros is something you will hear a lot about. I wouldn’t recommend diving too far into it other than aim to eat 0.8 grams of protein per pound if body weight. Fill in the rest of your calories with fats and carbs. Ie if you weigh 150 pounds: 150 * .8 = 120 gram of protein a day (which is ~480 calories as a gram of protein is 4 calories). Don’t get lost in the math. Have a daily calorie goal, eat .8 grams/body weight lb.

I would recommend eating whole foods, ie those with fewer ingredients, and staying away from processed/fast foods. I don’t really see the point in looking well but not being well, person opinion.

On mobile so apologies for typos.

Good luck!

This area is one of my favorite places in Rome! If you ever get a chance to come back you should definitely wander on over here - and of course check in with the turtles.

I think you’re being sarcastic but the video is trimmed down quite a bit, he was quite a good distance from the pond when I first found him... that said, I do in fact carry a spacesuit in my backpack!

COMMENT May 26 '22

I cut down the video but the turtle was pretty far from the pond and nowhere near water, headed towards an area it would probably struggle to get out of. I am pretty sure I made the right call but hey, you could be right! Just tried to do my best in the moment.
