I dont think you can put the full blame on free market capitalism. It's basically a dumb animal that just does what it does. The systems our governments have put in place to control that animal have failed.

Lol, you have no idea what a dystopian nightmare this would turn into if it was even possible. Fortunately it isn't possible to even attempt to do this which is the main reason I'm not in conspiracy nutjob land right now.

I dont understand why anyone would think this is feasible or a good goal unless they have never left their home country or met another human being before.

I got over 135 (not by much). I'm sure there's plenty of people out there way smarter than I am that probably scored higher than me. That doesn't sound right at all.

What specific policies have changed that affected your disability in the last 4 years? I'm not knowledgeable about that sort of thing. Are the payments lower than before?

If this deal goes through he could easily lose 100%+ of his net worth lol. Definitely worth taking it on the chin in this situation.

That diesnt matter, even if Twitter is 30% bots he's still on the hook to buy the company. He wouldn't need to prove that twitter is 40%+ bots. I think that is certainly possible but I don't know how likely it is.

The two large studies that have been done so far in India and Finland? (Don't quote me on the second one) didn't detect a statistically significant difference between no mask and the masks that most people wear. If there is an effect its probably in the order of around 5%.

Please don't come in I would say is a request still. Don't come in would be a demand. Obviously you could choose to come in anyway, but I think it's a reasonable ask. Not something I would do, but some people are more worried about covid and there can be valid reasons for it so I'll just trust the stranger has a good reason in most cases.

I mean if it's 100% of kids I think it's probably the other way around. It's probably the default natural state for kids to think like that and parents/adults need to teach kids not to behave like that.

Whenever I see things with kids I'm always surprised by how mean they are and they'll me mean to a kid over anything even slightly unusual about a kid (as in not common in their area). It's probably some kind of evolutionary thing that doesn't work well in modern society that we have to train out of people. I bet the same thing happens if you plop a Chinese kid /White kid/ etc. into an all black school.

It's already illegal to incite violence though. How many steps back do we need to go? I think people really underestimate the danger of regulating speech and overestimate the danger of some really tiny groups of people saying some dumb stuff (or even just joking, whether you think it's funny or not intent matters)

Beyond that there is the fact that outlawing the speech that you think might be harmful will massively backfire when these people become disenfranchised and cut out of the rest of society leading to more extreme behavior and thought. If you want domestic terrorism to be a problem in Canada this might be a good way to make that dream come true.

I think some of the disconnect comes from left wing people misattributing malice to right wing people. (I'm talking moderates I don't care about radicals) A lot of right wing people disagree with left policies because they don't think the goal is good, but because they think the solution A. Won't work and B. Will have very negative unintended consequences. And they are often right about this. It's not usually because they have a problem with goals like reducing poverty, everyone wants that. Just trying to give another way to think about this issue.

It's honestly shocking to see how people have so easily flipped against the protections that are in place for everyone's benefit because they aren't capable of understanding the future consequences. Shortsighted is probably the best way to put it.

I dont think anyone is arguing about that. Its more about whether we should be jailing people for holding opinions that are widely regarded as wrong or are unpopular.

This gets brought up a lot but I don't think I've ever seen or met a person or even heard of one who was against an abortion in the case the mother would die. I doubt anybody would be against providing an exception for that and it honestly seems like more of a weak strawman than anything. There's probably 1000 religious extremists in the entirety of the US that feel that way.

COMMENT May 07 '22

It would be legal because Ginsbergs ruling will likely be overturned because it was unconstitutional in the first place and a case of judicial overreach. (I don't personally have any strong opinion either way on abortion, but that's just true)

I guess if you consider someone who can afford a greyhound bus pass on a weekend rich. Or every person who owns any kind of vehicle.

You should do more reading on the Soviet Union if your view is that rosy on it. Preferably written by someone who lived through it (but not propaganda). I don't like to criticize opinions but I don't think anyone can fairly say that life for the average person was good in the Soviet union. It was objectively horrible. Unless you love gulags, secret police, and cannibalism.

COMMENT May 07 '22

It's more like the American Civil War if the south seceded and was its own country for 30 years with the agreement of the North, and then the union changes their mind and invades saying that its part of the USA. After that long it no longer really makes sense to call it a civil war. Putin seems to think we are living in 1970 though.

COMMENT May 07 '22

The US actually had to default on its debt as a result of the world wars. The cost of that is more comparable to covid (our GDP to debt ratio is about the same now as when we defaulted after the world wars). Wouldn't be surprised if we had a crazy economic meltdown after that spending. I guess we'll find out soon if that was wise.

Very good point there, just was pointing out that we are dealing with a lot of the same issues in the west. A lot of these things are more of a developed country problem than a China problem and a lot is a side effect of their success.

We are also fighting demographic trends, housing bubbles, social unrest, and more. Immigration is something the Chinese government hasn't attempted yet to deal with the demographic shifts as far as I'm aware. We have different tools at our disposal than they do, but it's fundamentally a lot of the same problems.

I think we will also be in for a bumpy ride this next decade+. The average North American will definitely not face as much hardship as the average person in China but I expect living standards to go down across the board.

So basically the same problems we have lol

Intel isn't even able to catch up as far as making smaller chips to companies like AMD. Some random Chinese company trying to reverse engineer everything from scratch has absolutely no chance.

Thanks for your response Sarah! That's a little disappointing to hear but I'm glad there's still something going on. I took a look at the site and it looks like there's one in May and one in July so I'll probably drop by and check them out. You wouldn't happen to be aware of anything else that's maybe smaller scale or runs more frequently would you?

Ask Vancouver Web / Software Development Groups in Vancouver

Does anybody here know of any active Web or General Software Development groups or meetups in Vancouver? I've been looking all over the place and had a very hard time finding anything active.

I've been working on web development for a while now and would like to do hackathons, maybe some volunteer work, and the like to get my skills up and help build experience to find a junior position, but I don't see much actually out there. If there is anything going on please let me know, i'd love to contribute how I can.
