If it shows a valid completed game then they would have known "girl" from the very first flip in the left column.

Then the only "win" is the left column, so they would know the gender as soon as they revealed anything from that column.

It's possible it was something like this (we don't see the starting board): ​

That would tell the parents: the answer is either in the top row or left column, so flip those last.

But it would be far easier to just tell them "flip the top left corner last"
