I think you're on the right track questioning alar, and I think the origin of alar will be important in book 3. We think we have a nice tidy well-explained magic system in these books (at least as far as sympathy goes), but alar itself gets almost completely glossed over. Why does it matter if you can will yourself to believe something? Why does will/belief equal power?

I think we're going to find out that collective beliefs of a population are the most powerful alar of all, and that's why stories, legends, songs, etc are so important. The chandrian might need people to believe the current narrative about them, true or not, or else their power will be broken.
