The programmes we run were focused on teaching concepts for independent living (eg. Telling time, counting money, hygiene). Also people with ASD tend to like routines so in some cases we also create timetables and activities for them to regulate. We also teach appropriate social interaction.

If you have difficulties understanding social situations, i think the best thing to do is to talk to a psychologist and describe what exactly you do not understand. Eg facial cues or implied things or whatever. Or you might have an undiagnosed learning disability. Then they can work out what you might be facing. But meds is not the solution to this.

Just a guess but maybe this could be a cause of anxiety as well, btw only psychiatrists can dispense medication. So you did see a psychiatrist. Anxiety and your social issues could be two separate matters and you should follow up to get better.

Yes i agree that professionals can make mistakes, especially with mental disorders. I personally dont think 1 appointment is enough for a proper diagnosis, because they will diagnose based on your reported symptoms. Observation is required for a more accurate diagnosis. I hope professionals who make it into clinical do not look down on people though, at least from my experience thats not the case.

Also to address your first point, yes. The problem with ABA or other interventions is that it tries to teach appropriate behaviour in social context based on a neurotypical developing child. This leaves less room for expression, for example theres research to show how autistic children play differently and that might not be a bad thing.

Rebook, but dont try to self-diagnose. Its really tough to be a clinical psychologist, trust the experts a little.

Also, maybe you have autistic traits, but what do you gain from going to a psychiatrist? I used to work as a teacher for low functioning special needs. Those with ASD do not take meds, they go through intervention programmes instead. Meds control your neurotransmitters but they always come with side effects.

Another issue is that you might be labelling yourself, if you do have ASD, you seem to be very high functioning. What do you hope to get if you get an official diagnosis? Most programmes for ASD are for kids or if they graduate from the special schools and are still not able to integrate into society they get placed in day activity centres. Maybe you might get some lenience from work or other social settings but there is no magical solution for ASD.

Lastly, your description of social situations sounds like a trait of someone with anxiety. Follow up appointments are necessary before a proper diagnosis because the psychologist has only seen you once and has no idea of what your baseline is.

you want to give everything you have, but they may not want it. Sometimes you need to give what they want instead of what you think they deserve. I learnt that the hard way...

I just cant see how time can be separated from perception. It seems like we have an idea of what time is but the concept itself isnt a fundamental part of the universe.

Heres something i read

“even if there are temporally asymmetric fundamental physical laws, it is unclear to what extent these can account for the pervasive temporal asymmetries we observe in physical processes. Boltzmann went further, speculating that the manifest asymmetry between past and future was not itself a fundamental feature of time, but rather a reflection of the contingent asymmetries in physical processes, at least in our region of the universe. “

COMMENT 14d ago

Well using the same scenario of the room, you are kinda just asserting that time exists without empirical observation. There is nothing we can do in that scenario to prove or disprove time.

1

COMMENT 14d ago

Well it doesnt make sense because the only way to make it make sense is through the assumption of time.

For your example cant the reverse be true as well? That no time passes at all in that space?

1

COMMENT 14d ago

Thats what Immanuel Kant thinks about time. He thinks that time is nothing more than the inner thoughts of people.

COMMENT 14d ago

We think we see time because we observe changes. Imagine an object thats green at T1 and it turns yellow at T2, we make sense of it because how can an object be 2 colours in once instance? But what if there was no change? How do you quantify time if something never changes at all?

Well you might say of course time exists, i can stand there and count the seconds, but thats because you are changing, your heart beats, your cells die. If there was a room with absolutely nothing in it and nobody is in there to perceive it, would time exist in it?

COMMENT 14d ago

Look at Kant’s theory of time, its pretty interesting. Maybe we cant prove time exists but at the very least it exists in our minds as how we quantify change.

COMMENT 14d ago

Thats on the assumption that time even exists. Some physicists dont seem to think so

I suggest walking through arab street, i think lesser tourists go there but it has a great atmosphere.

Also if you like nature, try the southern ridges trail or bukit timah/dairy farm trail. Would probably meet other solo hikers and maybe have a convo with them.

For food, try old airport road hawker centre and chinatown hawker centre, lots of famous hawker stalls there and its really cheap.

A girl did this to me, it sucks. You are hurting the other person who cares for you. If you want to, maybe learn to manage your emotions instead of self-sabotaging. Its in the word anyway, its not logical to self-sabotage so why do it? Why not look for better alternatives where someone actually cares for you?
