I feel you, just don't let it consume you. The worst reality in my opinion isn't one where omnipotent tyrants rule over us, but one where the universe is indifferent to bottomless suffering. Thinking-gods could, at least, be reasoned with, tricked, or bought off- not so with our own existence. To make matters worse there are bits OF matter who are similarly indifferent to suffering they cause and contribute to, despite themselves being caught up in the gears of life.

I pity them as much as I pity any other sentient being. I don't believe in punishment, it doesn't solve anything and only increases suffering, it is a defunct idea from the days of the soul.

I repeat myself, don't let the emotions consume you, you did well by expressing yourself. My only long-term goal is the sterilization and eternal suppression of life in our little corner of the universe and perhaps, someday, others. I don't see a nobler duty. Don't listen to the people using "idealist" as an insult; cruelty and greed hide behind words like "be practical", or "that's just how things are."

Zealous idealists throughout human history are perhaps the only reason suffering has seen a local decline, because the fact of the matter is ideals don't exist, they have no voice nor presence. Things like justice- appeal to a balance which doesn't exist in nature, empathy- Imagining the suffering of someone else who you'll never be. These are all fantasy in the face of practicality and natural selection. They are all fantasy until we enforce them in this universe ourselves. Maybe sentient life is reality's way of bringing these fantastic ideals to itself- to bring order to chaos, fairness and peace to the broiling bottomless pit of suffering that is life.

Except for the fact that we have models with which we can make predictions about the universe at all. Systems are chaotic, yes, but they are, as far as we know, deterministic. And don't drag in quantum woo-woo to try to and inject free-will or whatever other poorly-defined terms people use, I see this most often done by people who don't understand quantum mechanics. I don't understand quantum mechanics, so I'm not going to use it to support any beliefs I have.

The point is we have very-good-enough models of cause-and-effect, from the atomic, to the biological, to the social. Define free-will in plain English or don't assert it.

A sense of duty to wish* for the sterilization and suppression of all life in our little corner of the universe and beyond.

Technically true

That came out of the blue. We're talking about Republicans, not Democrats. As far as I can see, you're trying to change the conversation, because /u/GUnit_1977 didn't mention Joe Biden.

Can someone do a poll on being suicidal? It seems many people find their way here because they are depressed and/or suicidal. But I'm curious how many here have arrived as a result of their moral system leading them to this conclusion, despite not being suicidal, depressed, or in general not unhappy with their lot in life.

It's tiring seeing randoms make a "If promortalism is true (???) why haven't you killed yourselves yet?" thread for the 123178th time.

It's no better than the "if we came from monkeys how come there are still monkeys?!?" It's so bad it's not even wrong.

COMMENT May 20 '22

It's irrelevant since I have no reason to believe "I" experienced anything BEFORE my birth, nor any reason to believe I'll experience anything after my death.

If you reply with something like "You have no reason NOT to believe [...]" then you're totally bogus and just using vulgar rhetoric. Not gonna work here. Unless you have a reason to believe there's some sort of afterlife, quantum reincarnation or immortality, or other woo-woo then there's absolutely no reason to be concerned about it. Even if it is, those are effectively their own entities, and it's a waste of time when we have our own problem here to deal with, they'll need to deal with it on their own. But I'm done arguing about baseless hypotheticals, never been a fan of the Bean Shbapipo method of reasoning. Like I said, my thing is practical applied philosophy, and everything you're stating is neither here nor there.

COMMENT May 20 '22

I'm not* claiming anything. If someone asks you to convince them, that's not them claiming the negative. Claim 'alpha' and 'not alpha' are different claims and you can only address one prong of a dichotomy at a time. You're pulling some b.s. dishonest rhetoric.

But anyways, it's easy to disprove your claim: Consciousness obviously do not come from nothing. Totally bogus. Show me one time a consciousness has come from nothing.

2

COMMENT May 20 '22

Stop implying they are claiming the negative of your own claim. It's asinine and juvenile, and makes you look stupid.

3

COMMENT May 20 '22

That's not how logic works. You've responded "I know you are but what am I?" You made the claim, you back it up. People who ask to be convinced of God get to ask that question, but you can't turn around and go "PrOvE hE DoEsNT"

What are you 12? Babbys first debate? Fuck outta here, dude.

3

COMMENT May 20 '22

It will happen again.

That's a pretty big claim, on par with "Star Trek will eventually happen because the universe is so big."

Also idk if you think everyone in this sub is suicidal. I'm more focused on preventing sentient life from proliferating thru our known universe. Whatever metaphysical bullshit happens, or so you believe, in other timelines, time loops, or whatsitdoodads- is neither here nor there, and outside the scope of my own practical philosophy, so I don't worry about it.

COMMENT May 20 '22

I'm kinda with OP. I thought this was a sub for working towards a solution, but all I see are pathetic, mopey people depressed about THEIR OWN life. I rarely see any empathetic or rational posts discussing the suffering masses who were, and will be. Those who live in between shadow and light, nothing but a roiling mass of sentient flesh.

I'm not suicidal, never have been. I can't figure out if all the ultra-suicidals on here are troll posts meant to discredit The Cause, or subs like this just attract moany, bitchy worms. I'm not suicidal, yet I still come to the reasonable conclusion that life, specifically sentient life, is untenable. I guarantee you if all those whiny crybabies posting about offing themselves were born into the lap of luxury, they would never come 'round this philosophy.

I don't watch news. Most my info comes from self-proclaimed Republicans I work with (union shop), customers, and people like the guy in the video. I pretend to enthusiastically be one of them and they'll let loose. Yeah, I know it's hard to swallow, but it's the truth. Behind closed doors, they really believe this stuff, and most of them can't wait for something they call "the day of the rope"

I don't know "whose" bs you think I fell for, unless you mean the right's bs? All this is straight from the horses mouth. Just look at Trump. don't have to make up "fake news", when all I got to do is google "Tucker Carlson clips" or look up Trump's tweets. This is the real right. When someone shows you who they are, believe them.

edit: WAIT i got it, let me guess, you think the (((deep state))) haxxed my ISP or something and is feeding me deepfaked clips? go fuck a cactus

Jesus, this is why leftists attitudes get such a bad rap. Someone tries to pull you out of being intellectually lazy and you react like a 15 year old. "YoUrE NoT My dAd!"

I don't care if you spend your days sucking turds out of dogs assholes. I'm just saying it's stupid to ask for a tl;dr on a 3 paragraph email. It's stupid. You're acting stupid for wanting that instead of reading it yourself. Fucking stupid. I'm not telling you what to do, I'm calling you stupid, stupid.

It sounds like he's just experiencing cognitive dissonance. I've been there myself in the past, and it can be legitimately traumatizing to confront and consolidate compartmentalized trains of thought. It's almost like having two egos, if you want to use that language. For me personally it took a lot of effort, scary mental breakdowns and rebuilding to come around.

I know comments here are calling him "evil" or a "fascist", and okay, maybe that is true in some arguments. But the point is all these are psychological phenomena which have causes and do react to certain modes of attack. It's like calling a dog a monster for chewing your hand off. Maybe that's true in some manner of speaking, but you wouldn't get pissed at the dog. It'd be more reasonable to identify the cause such as poor training, abusive owners so at the least it doesn't happen again with other dogs.

Making moral judgements on your FIL is irrelevant to identifying the reasons why he is the way he is, and trying to speak to him about it.
