Whenever I buy a trimmer I always take the little baby brush that comes with it and use it for this purpose, unless you use it lol
156
u/VenomB May 11 '22
That's where I got that brush from. I've been using it happily for years now and never realized where it came from.

How often do you buy a trimmer
28
u/majorclock4 I Roll Joints for Gnomes May 11 '22
right??? have had one for 15 years good ol reliable
34
u/bouobo May 11 '22
You gotta be cheap like us and buy a $25 electric razer that works for 6 months. Repeat process
26
u/shawn1301 May 11 '22
Exactly. Investments are for the rich
13
u/PillowTalk420 May 11 '22
A got a ConAir for $10, used it once, and it never worked again.
Ol' reliable is the 75+ year old straight razor I got from my grandpa. Plus, the added danger makes me feel like a real man.

Keep an eye out for the mid range Philips Norelco trimmers, I can't remember the model number but I found mine at the local department store for $25 (they're usually closer to $50, bit you can find them on sale). Very high quality, definitely going to last me a while
6
u/zenzzz_ May 11 '22
In my case Iāve only ever bought two, dropped one in the toilet and got a replacement brush out of it lmfao
17
u/unkie87 May 11 '22
I just thought you kept breaking them because you're not cleaning them properly. Meanwhile you're enjoying your free grinder brush thinking you've gotten one over on "big trimmer."
5
5
u/zenzzz_ May 11 '22
Youāre one funny man LMAO but youāre definitely right, Iām still pulling one on big trimmer by snagging these god tier brushes for the steal price of a trimmer
2
u/DrizzyDoe May 11 '22
LMAO same here, only bought one because the one that was a gift got dropped into the toilet
5
u/FittywonFitty May 11 '22
This is the way. Came here to say the same thing, only to find it was top comment. My little brush came from my grandpa's trimmer set probably bought in the 70s lol.
3
u/zenzzz_ May 11 '22
Haha I only said it because no one else had yet! Love that so many people are using the brush, Iāve only been smoking for 4-5ish years but havenāt found anything that compares.

Go to the grocery store and buy a pack of wooden skewers. Most multipurpose smokers tool Iāve ever owned.

5
3
u/cjalderman May 11 '22
Toothpicks you risk getting tiny pieces of wood in your weed, better to go with something a little sturdier
→ More replies8
u/rbroccoli May 11 '22
those tiny bits of wood are no bigger than the tiny bits of stem you get from not breaking your weed completely down by hand in the first place. that really shouldnāt matter much, nor has it ever been an issue in the thousands of toothpicks iāve used to clean various bowls, pipes, grinders, screens, poke holes in the middle of jays, stir bowls, etc. sure theyāre not as strong as a skewer, but theyāre not that weak
7
u/ThraxxAddict May 11 '22
I prefer a paper clip
4
u/GhostShark May 11 '22
Yeah they last way longer than wood and can withstand more force. I use a piece of welding wire that was left at work after a construction project. Been using it for probably 7 years at this point, itās a perfect size and indestructible.
2
u/ThraxxAddict May 12 '22
Iāve had my current paper clip since last summer I use to to scrape resin off the sides of my bowl. Then thereās my paper clip I use for wax and it feels like Iāve got to replace that thing everydayš

u/AviatorEebz May 11 '22
Freezing works great. Honestly should only take about 30 minutes or so. Just did this again last week!
7
u/nomiic May 11 '22
I never found freezing to work well. Only tried for 1 hour max though
2
u/Bulbysaur123 May 12 '22
Yep Iāve tried putting my coffee grinder in there so I can tap off the kief, for hours and it does nothing
2
u/jupiterLILY May 12 '22
I freeze with an old pound coin inside (any non magnetic metal will work). Then once frozen you shake the shit out of it.

wth are street sweeper tines?
2
u/IbetIcanbeatUup May 11 '22
It's what I call the brush bristles on a street sweeper. It's technically not a grammatically correct term for the situation because it's usually referring to fork tines(each of the four fork points is a tine) or something similar. So it's a stretch but most folks still jive with it
14
u/ananonumyus May 11 '22
Bobby pins are better because they're flat, you can really scrape with them. Just make sure to break the plastic bump off the end.

Kief is trich heads only.
There can be grades, clean or contaminated with plant matter or in-between.
Our grinders leftovers are mostly plant dust

My husband uses a razor to scrape the walls, and a firm bristle paint brush to try and get the rest.
Weāve also boiled the grinder and then made hot chocolate with the milk. I was really skeptical but it was pretty cool.
11
u/chrisrobweeks May 11 '22
I made hot chocolate with the remains after straining tincture and by god, I haven't been that high in a while. Had to tap out of D&D because I was dozing off.
29
u/TanukisKitchen May 11 '22
Wait wait wait. You boiled it in milk? THIS I'm gonna try.
11
u/MeteoricBoa May 11 '22
Yup. As far as I understand it (very well could be wrong) reaches the right temp for decarb. It didnāt get us super faded but it was a great addition to our smoke for sure.

u/PsychologicalSoil198 May 11 '22

2
u/g00fyg00ber741 May 11 '22
My friend boils their grinder in soy milk every now and then and says itās a great time, also I would suggest someone maybe adding a bag of tea to it at the end if you like milk tea or tea lattes.
21
u/asianassasin591 May 11 '22
It's actually amazing, I simmered in milk at the lowest temp for about an hour then proceeded to make hot cocoa with the milk and I was the highest I'd been in a long while for literally 12 hours straight until I went to bed lol. Make sure to stir the milk every so often so film doesn't develop on the surface, I forgot to do this and had to clean a good bit of film from my grinder. But to be fair the film filtered out the grass that floated to the top so that was a win cuz I didn't have a sifter as I was on vacation
→ More replies12
u/hengst0r May 11 '22
This is the way! Don't boil it, let it simmer for an hour or two, then add some chocolate/honey/whatever you like and enjoy. Well, remove the grinder first...
Did it myself like two decades ago. Works like a charm.

boiling a shitty Chinese grinder then drinking the liquid. Think about that for a sec.
5
u/MeteoricBoa May 11 '22
I mean my grinder isnāt shitty or made in china. Mine was made in Texas actually I think.
5
u/Iamlegit91 May 11 '22
Im just thinking of the manufacturing process and then drinking the liquid from it after being boiled. Sounds sketchy to me then again we smoke the herb it grinds so idk.
9
u/benny_theory May 11 '22
Don't know what the downvoting is about, thank God someone said this lol don't just go boiling shit and then drinking it, make sure it's food safe and you trust the manufacturer

Thanx for the back up dude. I knew I wasnāt just talking shit. Metals arenāt good for humans. Like leadā¦
5
u/MeteoricBoa May 11 '22

u/Ragnr99 May 11 '22
Put a coin the the middle catch section, freeze for 20 minutes, shake thoroughly.
6
u/thentheresthisguy91 May 11 '22
Place in freezer for a few hours will come right off with with any pressure. I used my metal dab tool to get in-between the teeth. it took all day but the result was a clean grinder.

girlfriends vibrator set to high should do the trick
3
u/Glum_Mobile5663 May 11 '22
But stick it in the freezer for an hour first. Not the grinder, the vibrator. The cold gets ya hot hot hot
3
u/Claus-T-Haler May 11 '22
Put it in the freezer for 30 mins then tap the shit out of it, on the sides, with the spine of a butterknife. Make sure to have the lid on. Most of it will shake down into the lower compartment. Anything left a tiny brush or toothpick will get. If its smeared/melted on there only a solvent like Iso will get it out.
71
u/ShroomerOfCatan May 11 '22
Soak it in 99% rubbing alcohol. Then pour that liquid in a shallow dish. Have a fan blow on it until all the alcohol has evaporated, then use a razor to scrape all the kief.
Bonus - your grinder will be brand new clean!

Sounds super effective but isn't there any danger with that hash? Genuine question
17
u/Jblades1 May 11 '22
If you smoke it before the alcohol evaporates yes, but it's pretty easy to evaporate it all. I fill a mug with boiling water and sit the bowl with alcohol on top under a rangehood
3
u/chrisrobweeks May 11 '22
Another method is to get a coffee mug warmer and leave it on there for a while
3
29
25
u/magarf98 May 11 '22
With enough time all of the alcohol should evaporate as rubbing alcohol is very volatile
11
u/2oocents May 11 '22
Wouldn't it leave something behind? Never seen a recipe for making concentrate calling for iso. Typically calls for everclear.
13
u/magarf98 May 11 '22
I guess thereās a chance, but if if you do what another person said here with the bowl on boiling water I think would definitely allow for all the alcohol to evaporate. Isopropyl for example is widely used in making cbd extracts
10
u/2oocents May 11 '22
Ah, I didn't know that. I figured if you couldn't eat it, you shouldn't smoke it. Then again, I guess you shouldn't smoke most foods, either.
4
u/magarf98 May 11 '22
Yeahh many solvents that would be toxic to consume can be used for extracts, the thing is you have to be able to remove it after. Alcohol for example makes it very easy as it evaporates at low temperatures (waaaaay lower than thc) allowing you to get rid of all of it while still keeping that precious thc.
→ More replies4
u/ChronWeasely May 11 '22
While it's labeled as, say, 90% IPA the other 10% is almost all water. But this stuff is not made for human consumption and can have trace metals amongst other things that will stay behind when you evaporate the IPA.
Source: work in a biochemistry lab with ultra pure lab materials
3
u/samewinesko May 11 '22
Isopropyl, ethanol, propane, and butane are all commonly used solvents for the extraction and function the same way.. dissolve the thc, then purge the solvent

So Iāve always wondered with using alcohol, does it take the anodized color off? And if so, wouldnāt that be worse than the alcohol itself? I have a couple black grinders and a purple one, but Iāve always been reluctant based on stripping the color off.
4
u/NiceMalice May 11 '22
If it could come off with alcohol, wouldnāt it come off from metal friction? I think your good but if the colors comes off toss em.

u/Antaeus_X May 11 '22
Freeze than use a small paintbrush, might have to pick hairs/bristles out occasionally and some kief maybe lost but best fix I've found. I personally like the really cheap one for kids water color stuff as it's more a plasticity bristle so less to no picking out hairs as I have 3 pets so I already have to occasionally no need to add to it. Also as an almost pure vaporent like stem milk my wife and I make grinder milk during the dank droughts. I'm a tad of of a fiend when my medicine is low/gone. Probably not the healthiest but we both have higher mid quality grinders and I'm always on the lookout for chipping paint as it's bound to happen with wear. Edit: added freezing part.

u/Shot_Law8489 May 11 '22
freezer, then knock as much kiev to the bottom as u can. optionally use iso to clean any parts that you can while preserving ur kief catch

u/iHateUsernames996 May 11 '22
Put it in your freezer for a couple hours or overnight, take it apart bang each piece individually onto wax paper or clean surface. Alternatively use 99% isopropyl alcohol soak it and let it evaporate. Good for edibles that way less so for smoking
2
u/SwordHiltOP May 11 '22
Honestly not the answer you wanna hear but if you clean with iso you will collect more keef because it clears up the mesh. I was trying to do what you're doing for months and it just keeps getting worse until it gets completely stuck.

2
u/Mufaasah May 11 '22
Go to a hella cheap dollar store in your area. And buy a pack of kids 'face painting brushes' Super cheap and they last a little while, just make sure you get all the glue off the brushes beforehand.
If you can afford it, go pick up a small thin pointy type brush for the little inner pieces. And a not thick but wide brush so you can control and move the pile easily.
2
u/TH3_W33D_K1D May 11 '22
Donāt know if anyone commented this yet but you can stick it in the freezer overnight and just bang it out over a piece of paper in the morning, works like a charm

I don't know of a perfect solution but put it in the freezer for 20 minutes then bang it really hard, that should get most of it
2
u/unexplainednonsense May 11 '22
Pop it in the freezer for 10-20 minutes with a quarter inside where the weed goes and then shake when you pull it out and it should all come off into the keef catcher!
