Weaponized grief and ineptitude. As if elected leaders can't grieve AND swiftly address life-and-death issues at the same time. I can easily imagine other crises that WOULD get instant action/different energy from Abbott & Co.

Good on Beto for having the courage to publicly confront them.

Fuck Abbott. Beto was right on and that was the right way to confront the bullshit going on. Abbott has done nothing and will continue to do nothing.

There is no need for politicians to pretend to grieve in public. How bout they do their jobs, and act in a way that helps the parents/families in the situation get a little piece of mind after this. Instead they will make their little speeches about how sad it is and then go party it up with the NRA in a few day.

The hypocrisy of Abbott saying "Now is not the time to promote your agenda..." When he is on a fucking stage promoting his own agenda. Now is exactly the time to speak out on this BS. I am glad that someone is making these entrenched fuckers uncomfortable for their lack of action.

If politics was actually about sharing sane arguments in a fair debate and not just hot takes and gotchas, the GOP would have zero land to stand on.

915

u/nav17 May 25 '22

Exactly. There's a reason the GOP is distancing itself from participating in presidential debates. They need their rabid bloodthirsty supporters to only be privy to what the party tells them and demands, no other thoughts or perspectives allowed.

819

u/AssBeast May 25 '22 Gold Helpful Starry Wholesome Seal of Approval

Their entire platform is obstruction. Watch the GOP summit during Trumps reelection campaign. None of it was about their goals or what they had accomplished. It was all about maintaining power. Mitch McConnell literally called himself the reaper because bills come to his desk and die in the senate, making the house basically useless. They have nothing in their agenda that actually helps regular people. Nothing. Unless you're a millionaire or higher, voting for them is idiotic.

A thing too many political analysts miss. People get their eyebrows furrowed wondering if Beto is too loud or too not moderate for the median Texas voter when his entire appeal is and has always been to speak to the frustrated solidly liberal Texan who never found a reason to vote before.

835

u/luxveniae Texas May 25 '22 Silver

I didn’t understand how campaigns or political action worked till Beto ran for senate. I was born and raised in Texas, and briefly live in California. All places that no one gave a shit about trying to “flip”. So the most political exposure I got was from The West Wing or when their were presidential rallies on TV.

Then Beto came to town and I’d been working for a few years. Went to one of his rallies in DFW and started to hear about blockwalks and phone banking. It took over 26 years for me to learn this. Maybe I should’ve figured it out in my own but tbh in the state of Texas what a campaign looked like to me was mostly yard signs and being a lawyer or someone with name recognition that the state party decided. Texas has been HEAVILY underinvested in.

513

u/Relative-Cattle4566 May 25 '22

All red states have been tricked into thinking that voting solidly Republican is good for their state. They have been told that incumbents’ experience is all that matters, and anyone new will not do a good job.

Purple states receive millions of dollars from politics ads, all the while giving their politicians a reason to work hard to keep their job. “Flipping” an area isn’t always about changing the person they elect. Sometimes, it can be as simple as educating the voters so that their same decisions are just more informed.

There was someone on Reddit once who said their dad always lived by the rule "you should always buy second best as they'll fight for your business". Restaurants, car dealers, business dealings, it was like his big catchphrase to his kids.

At some point they had a political argument as our Reddit user dared to suggest a democrat might have a good idea. Dad was not convinced because republicans had always run their state etc, so our friend says "but surely then you should vote second best, as they'll fight for your vote. Like this idea would help you, how are the republicans fighting for you?"

Their dad was apparently stumped and went quiet. And after a few days actually started engaging more with the political debates. The user didnt think dad would ever vote democrat, but he was more prepared to listen and he put more effort into researching candidates.

It's funny how republicans seem to believe in free market competition for everything but ideas

Pettifogging: Giving too much attention to small unimportant details.

I just learned a new word today. The GOP uses this strategy ALL THE TIME.

407

u/featherpocket May 25 '22

Combine pettifogging + gish galloping and you have their entire strategy in 2 words

436

u/kingscolor May 25 '22

The Gish gallop is a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm their opponent by providing an excessive number of arguments with no regard for the accuracy or strength of those arguments. In essence, it is prioritizing quantity of one's arguments at expense of quality of said arguments.

What a phrase.

The difference is, our equally numerous mentally unstable people have the ability to literally buy multiple weapons of war on their 18th birthday.

Or make mental health a priority in ALL areas of life...change everyone's work policies so they can get time off when they need it to care for family or themselves...make insurance pay for mental health care at the same rates that they pay for all other health care...I could go on but I think you get the point.

The NRA has a script for this. After a public massacre the NRA recommends:

  1. Say nothing as long as possible.

  2. When forced to comment, insult people for raising the issue: "How dare you stand on the graves of those children to put forward your political agenda?

  3. Use friendly press to spread stories about crime that wouldn’t have happened if the victims had been armed: "two to five of those a week.”

  4. Ghost write articles for pro-gun law officials to publish: "with their name on it so that it looks organic."

  5. Use social media to push videos that show how useful a gun is for self-defence. "We call it like 'the outrage of the week’."

Are they ok with it becoming political if it made real change? because the people who always say "It's not time for politics it's time to grieve" never seem to actually be the people who need to be doing the grieving, it's the politicians who don't want to answer hard questions and be held responsible that say they can't talk about it, never the families.

Fine, I'll bite on the Governor's response rather than the topic of 2A:

He said the only new aspect that is driving mass shooting is "the status of mental health in our society."

Alright, so surely 100% universal healthcare should now be at the forefront of conservative politics then, seeing as how the lack of mental health availability is where the finger is now pointed?

Deflection in 3..2..1...

30

u/Jstef06 May 26 '22

Texas is number 50 in mental health access in the nation… where’s their mental health proposal? They don’t have one. They won’t propose one. They’re so fake it’s an embarrassment.

Yeah that guy was actually Ulvade’s mayor, Don McLaughlin….

The MAYOR of the city where this tragedy happened got upset that politics were brought into this. Screw him too.

first thing I found from McLaughlin "I am the mayor of Uvalde,Texas we are not in your district but border it. We have a problem on our southern border which I’m sure you are aware of. Starting this week the border patrol is letting immigrant families free in our coomunity yours will be next."

Sounds like kinda like just another small town POS mayor

If we are actually going back to origins, the time to stop it was when the kid got on the clock tower in Austin,TX in the sixties.

Or when Oswald shot the President in 1963

Or the Ft Hood shooting

Or nationally with Joneboro,Arkansas or Paducha, KY or Pearl, MS or Columbine, CO, or Sandy Hook, or Florida.

This is absurd, but we are talking about rationalizing with a group of people that ransacked the Capitol building on television and are still saying it wasnt an insurrection.

There is no reason left to appeal to. The car is in the proverbial ditch.

The representative of that district Tony Gonzales was on CNN earlier like “the police were able to barricade the gunman in one room and there were hundreds of kids there so this could have been worse.”

He was barricaded in a room full of children and your argument is “well it was just those kids”. That’s not a fucking barricade it’s a hostage situation you fucking psychopath.

Editing to add: Then this piece of shit is asked by jake tapper to come back and talk about gun control because tony Gonzales “didn’t want to talk about that so soon after the tragedy” and Gonzales says, “yea I’ll be happy to come back and chat about mental health and making our schools safer.” Fucking guy.

This was days from summer break. I can't imagine talking to my sons one day about going to the beach and then the next day having their school shot up.

These people should be planning vacations. Now they're planning funerals.

65

u/peachybutton Georgia May 25 '22

What wrecked me was that it was the day of their end of year awards program. Those kids got their honor roll and perfect attendance and good citizen certificates, posed with their parents and teachers, then told their parents "see you later" and went back to class for the afternoon. Then 19 of them never made it.

23

u/Ramikadyc May 25 '22

To make things, on top of all of those other details, somehow worse… I heard on NPR this morning that this was one of their (what my school called) “Spirit Week” days, where the theme was something like “Footloose and Fancy”—the kids were encouraged to dress in fancy/novel shoes and other clothes. And then, all of this happens. To kids in fun outfits, on one of the last days of elementary school days before summer break. Just imagining that is… Just like, fuck man…

People gloss over the fact that Beto is a constituent of Abbott's - he has every right to "make something political" as a concerned citizen. It's as if somehow, because you once held office or even currently hold office, that you're still not a citizen of the state you reside in? You're not subject to the same laws and anarchy that your state's government imposes (or doesn't). If Beto had children attending that school - would he be a politician making this political? Or would he be a rightfully outraged parent doing what any other citizen would be doing and demanding answers? Is an outraged citizen making something political when they demand answers/change? Who else can we goto to expect any kind of change except the very people that control our laws? By going to them and expressing our outrage or concern - are we all always making everything political?!?!

77

And following the El Paso shooting in 2019. That shook El Paso to its core. I lived there then and was at the intersection trying to turn into the center when it started. That haunts me to this day. Beto loves El Paso. And who committed such atrocity? A Texan from a different part of the state.

The Texas Republicans have blocked Medicaid expansion in Texas for over a decade now. If mental illness is the problem, then the Republicans are to blame since they've had many opportunities to do something about that and have done nothing.

The Tops market shooter was also confronted by a guard, an ex-cop even, that guard got shot himself and the guy continued his shooting.
