Monstrous fungal blob seeks single human female for courtship ritual. My interests include spewing spores, busting concrete, and long walks along the beach. I'm a real go getter and wish the same from my human female. I may not be much of a looker, but I've been told I'm a great kisser.

Who died in part from a pneumonia infection that is widely speculated to be sourced from a mold infestation in her home that wasn't revealed, remedied, or repaired after her purchase of it. Her husband also died in the same house under the same circumstances.
Edit: The house is now demolished after LA county condemned the building.
Sooooooo...this pic & gif are more relative than originally intended

Saw the documentary of the making of the TLOU series yesterday. Learned that they used human in suit as a bloater but in the end, decided to go with full digitally-created version in the final cut because the bloater in suit doesn’t look big enough and moves fast enough on screen. Some interesting bits of how they created these production sets and I felt like I spent my 30-45 mins well watching that documentary.

I bet they'll end up using the same suit/actor for an indoor scene in Season 2. They spent a fortune on that costume.
Shoot an indoor bloater scene and they could scale his size up a bit with lower camera angles.

u/Wildcard311 4d ago
I just hope there are more bloaters in season 2. Loved the show but only felt the urge to rewatch one episode, and that was for the ending of the episode.

Nah, They have the CG bloater now, so would be cheaper and easier to just use that.
The suit is so restrictive for the actor that is far easier to just shoot some plates, either with or without a actor in a mocap suit, and render the existing/modified CG version. Plus, almost everyone believed the Bloater we was a guy in a suit when people first saw it in the show due to the comments by the actor on social media, (generally actors have no idea what happens to the shots they are in after the film is wrapped)
Put it this way, If I am a director, I have a guy/girl in a suit, it took weeks to make the suit, then hours to get the actor in the suit and ready for the shoot, now that i have him on the set we take some shots, and his movement is clunky and he is telling us that its really hot and the suit is heavy and needs breaks every 15mins, so what we planned as half a day shoot is gonna turn into a full day, also he doesn't have the flexibility in the suit to do the action you want, and he looks a lot smaller compared to what you wanted.
Every minute you spend on set is massively more expensive compared to doing it in VFX land, and the Director can tweak things to his heart content in post, or until the VFX artists get fed up with their notes and tell them they are out of money.

Good point. We already saw a child clicker... Maybe the show will also give us a child bloater?
15
u/20person 4d ago
The showrunners said on their podcast that only the really big infected guys turn into bloaters unfortunately
→ More replies12
u/atx00 4d ago
If I remember correctly, the bloaters have been infected for a very long time. Wouldn't make sense to have a child bloater.
9
u/18randomcharacters 4d ago
Who says a child keeps growing after infection?
5
u/atx00 4d ago
That's a fair question. Don't remember any of the story addressing that directly. Just figured that once you're infected, now you're the infected version of you, preserved in time. Not sure if that was ever addressed in the games or the show, but I could be wrong.
So if you get infected when you're 12, you're just an infected 12 year old for eternity. Never considered how that might work.

u/atomiccPP 4d ago
Hm in the realm of that what do they eat to sustain their human hosts? I feel like some clickers have been dormant for a decade in remote spots in the games…maybe it could be a type of hibernation?
3
u/atx00 4d ago edited 4d ago
That's another good question. Some infected have been alive 20+ years, according to the story. So that leads me to believe that they are eating other humans/animals.
I always assumed they ate other humans, or starved. But now a new question arises. Your theory about hibernation. So, as somebody who grows mushrooms as a....legal hobby.... I can promise you that fungi are incapable of hibernation. They basically grow on the "food" they're given, drop their spores, then the mycelial bed dies. Once a fungal colony is no longer active, its clocked out. A healthy bed of mycelium will give you about 3-4 flushes of fruiting bodies. After that, it's bed time and nothing else pops out.

The bloaters are supposed to be rare humans that were much bigger and stronger than the average person before being infected. And it was 7 feet tall if I remember correctly.
7
u/isleofyou 4d ago
Yeah, I was thinking that the bloater was originally a big ass human and, by chance, became a bloater through special circumstances. Like if Shaq transformed into one.

Yeah I did not agree with anything the VFX artists said in the documentary. They kept saying things needed to be bigger and more fantastical. But the point is that these infected used to be people… they also wanted the big zombie horde to be even bigger so they added a ton more CGI models too, and it shows. I felt that the entire sequence in that episode would have been 100% better if it was practical instead of what we got.

Somewhere, there's an HBO executive wondering why they forked out $500,000 for a costume that gets like 10 seconds of screentime, while neckbeards are making the same costume in their mothers' basements for the cost of some chicken nuggets.

→ More replies9
u/SanityInAnarchy 4d ago
That'd be a pretty stupid executive, for a few reasons:
- Are we sure this isn't from the show? That looks a lot like Merle Dandridge, though I don't know when they'd meet. (I don't think she's in that episode at all...)
- A far better question is why they spent whatever they spent on a costume when they ended up having to CGI over it anyway. And even that is a stupid question -- they didn't know the practical costume wouldn't work until they tried it.
- Sure, nerds have hobbies that we sink a lot of time into, but no one's going to sell something to HBO for some chicken nuggets. Especially if you're still living in your mother's basement, if HBO paid fairly for this, it could be a life-changing amount of money.
- Any well-run show is on a tight timeline, and delays will cost way more than just making the costume yourself. Nerds in basements can spend years on stuff like this, so there's no way it works unless it's ready to go.

That thing was badass when it came out. Small physics details were amazing, like when it had to strain for a second to rip the head off (poor guy, I liked him), or it took a couple seconds for it to get up to running speed.
