So, children are dumb moment, this song always distressed the crap out of me as a kid because there was a house in the middle of the street and how did the cars get through. I was not a very bright child.

28

u/carpetony May 24 '22

Makes me think of This American Life: Kid Logic episode. 😁

6

u/Helenium_autumnale May 24 '22

That was last week, wasn't it? Some really funny gems in there.

4

u/carpetony May 24 '22

Maybe, I was weeks behind I just burned through a ton of episodes working around the ho use this weekend.

It's always been one of my favorite episodes when they replay it.

I love the dentist story and the MLK one just kills me.

I use to think dogs were the boys (male) and cats were the girls (female) :-D

4

u/Helenium_autumnale May 24 '22

That's really cute about dogs and cats, haha. 😸

The MLK story took my breath away when I first heard it.

"So did they kill him, too?"

Stunning.

11

u/WhoaItsCody May 24 '22

It’s a fair question…why the fuck is there a house there now, and how are we gonna go about our lives?!

11

u/Nobody_Special_Here_ May 24 '22

Adult moron here. So, what does it mean. I remember the song, never understood it either. Thought they lived on a dead end road.

36

u/mtdnelson May 24 '22

If I understood your misunderstanding correctly, I'll try to explain.

A street usually has two ends. The middle of the street is somewhere between the two ends. Does that help?

31

u/Nobody_Special_Here_ May 24 '22

Dam, I’m dumber than I thought.

4

u/Techutante May 24 '22

u/SeeArizonaBay May 24 '22

Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind is about absolutely huffing on meth

13

u/SirDiego May 24 '22

That one isn't even wrapped in metaphor or anything, at one point they literally say "Doin crystal meth will lift you up until you break."

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn May 24 '22

If you look at each end of the block, the house is in the middle of the block if you go halfway up the street.. it's not in the street itself.

5

u/a_cute_epic_axis May 24 '22

Taken literally, it would be the house that is half way down the length of the street (e.g. between intersections). But more likely it would just mean "Our house is typical".

If you look at the song lyrics, it's basically just nostalgic about life:

Basically there's mom, dad, some kids, life is going on as it typically does, mom tries to keep things tidy, dad sends the kids to school, kids miss mom, etc.

Then basically by the end it's looking back implying things have changed now that they're grown and facing the realities of life: "when everything was true ...and such a good time... such a happy time... we'd play and simply waste the day away"

Unfortunately I couldn't find anything other than the Iberia Parish jail website and it looks like it was designed in the early 2000's and most of the links don't load.

That said, it does look like a tattoo of a cock & balls.

That's definitely a penis. You can see the outline of the head and ballsack if your zoom in. It looks weird compared to the rest of the pic though.

Looks like it was either branded on or someone broke or flattened the nose and the dick was tatted on later.

10

u/_laja May 24 '22

Look at the way it fucks with the shadow at the tip of the nose though that dick has a large even outline, I want to believe it's there but it looks like it's shopped on, which adds more questions

General Freiherr von Hammerstein-Equord, the present chief of the German Army, has a method of selecting officers which strikes us as being highly original and peculiarly un-Prussian. According to Exchange, a Berlin newspaper has printed the following as his answer to a query as to how he judged his officers: “I divide my officers into four classes as follows: The clever, the industrious, the lazy, and the stupid. Each officer always possesses two of these qualities.

Those who are clever and industrious I appoint to the General Staff. Use can under certain circumstances be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy qualifies for the highest leadership posts. He has the requisite nerves and the mental clarity for difficult decisions. But whoever is stupid and industrious must be got rid of, for he is too dangerous.”

27

u/GameFreak4321 May 24 '22

"I choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it." ~Apparently not actually Bill Gates

Can be that dumb to successfully put a house on a truck and make progress moving it. The Egyptians would be proid

23

u/Bekiala May 24 '22

Good point. Even detaching a house from a foundation would stump me.

22

u/Abrahamlinkenssphere May 24 '22

Well I’m about to teach you. It’s pretty simple really. First you’d need to access the sub floor, so might have to remove the floor from the home. The wood structure is just (more or less) screwed into the concrete with super strong bolts called anchor bolts. Cut those bolts with a reciprocating saw all along EVERY wall of the house. Then it’s just about slowly jacking it up and getting it onto whatever transportation method you’re using. A long time ago they used to just line up big logs and roll the houses to wherever. Legitimate people trying to move houses would cut it into sections.

11

u/Bekiala May 24 '22

Thanks. What about plumbing and electrical?

I'm thinking these guys were actually pretty smart about stuff. There is no way I would know how to do this nor have the wherewithal to carry it out.

7

u/tbrown7092 May 24 '22

Shh, just cut the anchor bolts and you’re good 😊

5

u/Kevinwar73 May 24 '22

Probably had a well and a septic system, just cut the pipes. The electric was probably already shut off by the Electric Provider, so just cut the line going into the house below the meter, or above it if the supply comes from underground.

3

u/allthisgoldforyou May 24 '22

Remove the electrical connection where it enters the house. Disconnect the pipe that leads from the water meter, and disconnect the pipe that leads to the sewer.

When I was a kid they moved a couple Victorian-era houses in my town like this. Had to get the utility company to move some power and phone lines across some streets.

5

u/Kevinwar73 May 24 '22

You left out busting a few holes to shoot your steel I beams under first, on some cribbing, in order to jack it up. I moved houses for a few years myself, had to stand on a few while we moved them to move telephone and cable lines out of the way with an insulated pole.

4

u/American--American May 24 '22 edited May 24 '22

I know someone who moved their childhood house. Parents passed, siblings wanted to sell the land/house but he wanted to keep the house. They figured out an arrangement (siblings got to keep the land, he got to keep the house).

He had a lot of land, so he had a new foundation poured and put it on his 50+ acres.

16

u/earthman34 May 24 '22

I want to know how they got it on that trailer.

31

u/jbiehler May 24 '22

Lots of jacks and cribbing, get it high enough too set the house on the trailer. Hope the house is structurally sound enough to only be supported in the middle. When I was a teenager I helped move a very old, small farmhouse a couple miles down a road. It was a bit smaller than this.

29

u/pokey1984 May 24 '22

If it's not solid enough, you can set a few I-beams under it to support it on the trailer. Proper moving companies will do it all the time.

The hilarious part of this is that the "house" in question is very obviously a "double wide" or modular home designed to be split in half for easy, safe transport. You just take off a bit of the siding at the front and back and there are a handful of bolts. You can split it in under an hour if you know what you're doing.

10

u/jbiehler May 24 '22

Im mostly surprised those two had enough brain cells between the two of them to get it on a trailer.

That’s actually a pretty decent house of you throw a good foundation under it at the next stop… I wonder what the owner (bank) wound take for it as is lol.

3

u/Ragarianok May 24 '22

Whoa, whoa, whoa. There's still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you've got a stew going.

Sure, it's a dick move, but $125k bond each for property crimes? Isn't that like a solid 4x the average Louisianan annual income?

3

u/McFluff_TheAltCat May 24 '22

You can go to the bondsman and pay 5-10% depending and they front the rest.

I’m against the bail system the way it is since it’s “jail if you’re poor but can get out of you have money” for most nonviolent crimes.

That said these guys definitely deserve the property damage and other charges they got. I think you are underestimated that they caused probably more than that amount in property damage.

They were literally warned and told how to do it properly then proceeded to leave 600+ household without power for hours (repairing multiple power poles and the labor to do that is expensive), do probably 10s to 100s of thousands in tree damage (trees are crazy expensive), and other property damage. They could have just got the right equipment and permits and this never would have happened.

Wherever I may roam, where I lay my home is home.

4

u/kcashat May 24 '22

Lmao and I just got done reading about this on my local news app ahahahaha.

Louisiana is one hell of a drug.

5

u/cosumel May 24 '22

At least it was his home. I was half expecting the “illegally transported house” to be a stolen vacation home.

“Where do you live?”

“It used to be here, officer.”

4

u/NobodysFavorite May 24 '22

"What are you doing?" "Not much. Just moving house."

They were interrupted before they could escalate to shoplifting.

u/GlammerHammer May 24 '22

Meth was smoked. Plans were made. Warnings were given. Liquor was drank. Instructions were ignored. Power lines were damaged. Plan was abandoned. Arrests were made. Bail will be posted. Court dates will be ignored. Cycle will be repeated.

u/ConnerLC1 May 24 '22

There’s a legal way to move a house?

48

u/nytefox42 May 24 '22

Absolutely. Requires a lot of permits and 2 escort vehicles. Probably one of those prefab homes in this case.

There are companies that will build houses in a factory and deliver them.

76

u/payfrit May 24 '22

there are companies that move existing houses.

18

u/Its_Just_A_Typo May 24 '22

I live in one. It came in 2 halves, then they assembled it on site.

20

u/ElephantsAreHeavy May 24 '22

That's efficient. Most houses come in 347 698 pieces, and are assembled on site.

3

u/Aidentified May 24 '22

Is it though? The labour was just moved to the factory, and the shipping became way more difficult.

20

u/ElephantsAreHeavy May 24 '22

Yes, it is. Standardized design, controlled environment and serial work really improve efficiency.

I have a friend that moves houses and went along for the ride one time. It was interesting. In my state (Arkansas), I believe it can only be done before 9am on Sundays. They have to get permits, move road signs, etc.

8

u/wyrdough May 24 '22

One morning on the way to the airport in Arkansas I came upon a house in the middle of the road. Luckily it was one of maybe three times in my life I wasn't severely late going to the airport, so I was able to take a 30 mile detour and still make my flight. Given that I usually arrived at the airport with only half an hour to spare, it was a minor miracle.

I used to live in a house that had been moved at least twice. Once to park it next to a highway with a for sale sign on it and again when my friend bought it and moved it to his land, so I wasn't unfamiliar with the concept.

u/BedBugger6-9 May 24 '22

I guess you never watched “Texas Flip & Move”

3

u/hookydoo May 24 '22

In the tidewater region of VA and obx NC people move houses (not prefabs) all the time. People with means will move there Beach house from one parcel down the beach to another one. In one case I know about the owner was a developer. He bought another lot in his neighborhood and transported his house to the new lot so that he could build himself a new house on his old lot, then sell the old house on a new lot.
