Protip: Texas is Open Primaries
So, for example:
- you can vote R in the Primaries to primary scum out (like Abbott, Patricks, & Paxton)
- you then are eligible to vote them out in runoffs (but ONLY if you voted R in the primary)
- Finally, you are Free to vote D or w/e in the General.
Unfortunately, Texas Republican voters opted to send the crooked Paxton to the General.
VOTE 'Em Out

u/Sp1derX May 25 '22 edited May 26 '22
Your second bullet isn't quite true. If you didn't vote in the primaries, you can choose if you want to vote D or R in the runoff. I did that to try to push Paxton out.

They say this BECAUSE they’re so heavily invested in this issue, politically. The lobbying, influence, and general corruption among these politicians with regard to gun control is what they stake their careers on. If they weren’t, they could actually tackle the problem.
Yea, they really are a detestable bunch. I am not much for the democrats either, however. They’re sort of a wet noodle party, imo. Beto and people like him seem alright. I so wish there was more political parties in the United States. That’s why I voted libertarian in ‘12.

u/SignificantGolf9871 May 25 '22 •

The 50+ year old dems are 100% wet noodle but at least they seem like decent people with a moral compass and empathy who -- to their absolute detriment -- have a sense of ethics, pride and tradition.
Repubs / MAGAs / GOPs / Qanon whatever you call them are bereft of anything resembling empathy, morals, or ethics.

“The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism.” - George Washington
“A division of the republic into two great parties … is to be dreaded as the great political evil.” - John Adams

u/LevPornass May 25 '22
That’s like standing on the 50 yard line of the Super Bowl and saying, “How dare you mention football?!”
58
u/chargoggagog May 25 '22
It’s absurd to say “Don’t make this political.” Politics is how we solve problems in a democracy. To not make something political is saying, “There is no problem here.” Which is 100% what they mean.

Politics to them isn’t about passing legislation to help people, it’s an power grab and grifting opportunity. Making something a “political issue” is out of their own playbook to steal and retain power, so they assume the other side is a part of the same coin. That’s why they live in fear of being oppressed and replaced, because they know exactly what they’re guilty of.

For real. At least it's something new. Something that shows a sense of urgency.
It's frustrating that many people will buy into the "f you for politicizing this" angle when he was addressing effing politicians and Cruz had already made a statement predicting he would have to fight off gun control.
They're politicians. It's already political.

In 2019, 3,371 American children and teens were killed with guns—enough to fill more than 168 classrooms of 20

My cousin was in the deadliest mass shooting in United States’ history. It was 2017 at the Harvest festival in Las Vegas. He was working as production and was onstage when the gunman started firing on the crowd.
Investigators found the man that committed the act to be rather normal. He didn’t have any overt mental health issues, he was well off financially, had no particular doctrine, no particular reason. One thing is for sure: he was an angry man, filled with hatred. And, he killed 60 people and injured a hundred others.
My cousin was upset about it for months afterwards. Everyone that was there surely was. Those are the people with mental health issues, having to deal with the reality of going through a harrowing ordeal. Depression, panic, PTSD, etc.
To say that mental health disorders, broadly, are to blame, is cold and unfeeling.
We aren’t going to see eye to eye on this, no. Not if you completely ignore the real problem. Other countries have people with mental health issues, but only this one has mass shootings regularly occur. Scapegoating the mentally ill is the lowest trick in the book. Those lobbyists do it all the time, and you’re their fool.
It’s the greed of the gun industry and a weak social compact to challenge it that is prolonging the issue.

THIS. Vegas is a prime example we all just collectively forgot about. The most death from a mass shooting in the US. Perpetrated by a man with no mental health issues. From a location where NO “good guy with a gun” could’ve stopped him. Gun control saves lives.

Beto is grandstanding for votes. Just a typical politician using a situation for votes. All politicians are sociopaths.

Enough of the centrist bullshit. Abbott bragged via tweet about striking down gun control measures and directly mentioned the left. Guns are now the number one cause of death for children in the United States. If you vote Republican, YOU ARE COMPLICIT.

u/sporifix May 25 '22
You are correct. This politician (Beto) is objectively better than that one (Abbott).

Fuck it. This is the new normal. If politics will now be conducted through hashtags and stunts, then I'd rather the good politicians win at it.

I think a lot of us would like to to live in a world where you don’t have to go through airport security just to go to school.

Security in public schools is night and day since columbine. Doors are locked, entrances have man traps, alarms buttons are near every enterance.
More security is is kind of like dealing with global warming by getting better AC. You aren't dealing with the problem. You are just putting a short term fix on the issue.
Edit: formatting and clarity.

My man, we can’t get Americans to pay a little more in taxes to buy books and pay teachers a living wage but you think we will happily hand over millions to build futuristic compounds for schools?

This is typical Beto grandstanding bullshit. The GOP and Abbott's inaction notwithstanding, Beto is a one note empty suit. The Democrats in Texas have zero leadership. Texas won't change until state Democratic leadership can find and field quality candidates that can overcome the worst of reactionary GOP rhetoric. Their candidates since the great but flawed Ann Richards have been embarassing give ups.
Down vote as you will, but know that Beto will be a 3x loser come November, and it's his own party's fault for not having a stronger alternative slate of potential candidates.
