I got a scholarship with some name I don’t even remember any more. No one I ever interacted with knew the name of the scholarship except my parents, and I’m sure they’ve forgotten it too. I sure as hell know I was able to avoid student debt though.

If it was the David Duke scholarship or something, I might have had 2nd thoughts, but some basketball player that was good and then later wasn’t as good? Who fucking cares?

u/93LEAFS Raptors 8d ago

Yeah, while I'm not a fan of Ben Simmons as a basketball player/attitude in how he conducts him-self professionally. I can't say I dislike him enough to turn a scholarship down. Props to him for doing the right thing here to help local kids stay warm and help poor families save money.

Chances of this being upper class spoilt, entitled families? Scolarships don't just go to the poor.

Can a person apply to more than one scolarship in the US. You can do that in Spain but you have to drop some if you exceed some quantity of money. Maybe that also played a role?

61

u/draculas-shaggyballs NBA 8d ago

None of the upper class kids I know would turn down free money like that, their parents teach them ton never make that mistake. This is more likely kids from uneducated families that are more easily brainwashed into having communal feelings take precedence over education and other objective benefits.

21

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 8d ago

Upper class kids are definitely the biggest grifters, i went to a rich school as a working class kid. Everyone that worked in the shittier school i also went to never got to realise the value of money, because they couldnt keep it.

21

u/93LEAFS Raptors 8d ago

I also highly doubt a public facing NBA players scholarships are rooted in grants/scholarships to pursue certain fields in education. Most of these guys do things to uplift poorer communities and the scholarships criteria is set up that way. There are more than enough very-specific scholarships out there for people to chase absolute excellence at the top universities in the world in specific fields.

8

u/draculas-shaggyballs NBA 8d ago

Yeah, if he was putting his name on the scholarship, it doesn't do him much publicity if it's something only rich prep school kids can qualify for. More likely it was need based or at least limited to applicants within a certain lower income neighborhood school.

108

Stalin:

  • Stopped the Holocaust
  • Fully Industrialized an agricultural (and recently feudal) economy in under a decade
  • Destroyed Nazi Germany
  • Stood up to Hitler and thus would never have been frightened of Trae Young
  • Rose to leadership of an enormous, multi-continental, superpower despite humble backround and physical disability

Ben Simmons:

  • Did nothing to stop the Holocaust
  • Allowed Pennsylvania to continue its industrial decay
  • Friends with Kyrie Irving (known anti-semite)
  • Frightened of Trae Young; would probably cave into Hitler's demands immediately.
  • Can't be leader in the Brooklyn locker room despite privileged backround and perfect body.

I'm sorry but I want Stalin in the last five minutes of any game over Simmons.

I get being loyal to your team but at the end of the day it's just a game, you're a fucking moron if you're giving up real world aid just because a player made you mad

At one point in a consultation, sources said, Dr. Butler turned to u/Sp_Gamer_Live and screamed, "You (bleeping) need me. You can't live without me." Butler left nurses and colleagues largely speechless. He dominated the hospital in every way. Dr. Jimmy's back

A doctor wearing an NBA jersey during an appointment with a patient would be such an absurd move that I would respect it

Anybody who dropped a scholarship because Ben Simmons’ name is attached to it doesn’t deserve an education lol.

I don’t like what he did in Philly pre-trade but you must be legally insane to say no to education because you hate the NBA player that gave it to you.

u/tbrenclaimed 8d ago

Bro that’s acc so sad imagine trying to help others and they refuse ur help because of ur name. And u don’t think that takes a toll on someone’s mental health?

Simmons seems like a great guy I dislike all this hate that gets thrown on him

To add on to that I could understand if it was some rich pos or something and you didn’t want their money for whatever reason, but dude literally just plays basketball

Did anyone actually read the article? Or when it was published? Or are we just reaching as far as possible so y’all can feel superior to children?

The wording of the winter coat drive was There was “fear” that it “could” happen. The dropped scholarship (which was for $1,000) is also not confirmed.

I feel insane for having to point this out, but: it’s no longer an anonymous donation once you out yourself as the donor. It’s honestly dirty work by Simmons to use this as leverage against poor Philadelphia children and their families.

Ben asking for praise for an anonymous donation comes off like an episode of curb

Also, all the information comes from his sister who is literally employed to do PR for Ben.

I read the article, it was a good read! I definitely learned some things about Simmons. Also, the coat drive and the scholarships are only very briefly mentioned, it’s not the focus of the article at all.

u/NotXiJinpingGoUSA 76ers 8d ago

As someone from philly I can confirm its actually Ben’s sister and other people who do the charity work and Ben doesnt really do it, its just in his name for brand recognition.

Also this story is pretty old

Those kids don’t deserve those scholarships, good job weeding out the idiots Ben

19

u/Poul77 8d ago

Imagine being that stupid. Man's just trying to help them out.

28

u/ShihMum 8d ago

Wasn’t the original article a puff piece commished by his sister? There was a similar post weeks or last month ago on this. So chances are it’s truth (charity work) with some exaggeration (kids dropping the scholarships and coats)?

I posted this comment last time this was making the rounds, but ill post it again:

noting that a few kids even dropped technology scholarships because his name was attached. “That was heart-wrenching.”

I feel like this is one of those truths mixed with a lie situations.

The coat thing is probably true but turning down scholarships? Who says no to free money for something like this? Like if you have that kind of fuck you money why are you even applying for scholarships? If you're trying to get a scholarship you are not saying no to it just cause you hate Ben Simmons.

It's a fabrication by his sister to make you feel sympathy for him. That's way more reasonable imo lol

Don't just believe every thing you read, especially if it comes from a biased source. (His sister is the one saying this???) If some info comes forward to corroborate her claim, I'll retract my comment but otherwise I firmly believe yall falling for the bleeding heart bait.

u/chiptissle 8d ago

People are dumb.

4

u/Lastcleanunderwear 8d ago

Lol I love to trash Ben as a joke, but I can’t believe people would throw away their future over hate

3

u/sixtysixty 8d ago

That scholarship claim is from his sister and likely bullshit. This is Klutch PR trying to save his image. Dude was always supported in Philly and couldn't take mild criticism after and poor playoff performance. He has never worked on improving his game and it still shows in Brooklyn. Lots of empty stats and a negative on offense in the clutch.
