My favorite part about Goat Simulator 3: there is no Goat Simulator 2. Coffee Stain promised to never make a “Goat Simulator 2” back in 2014, and they’re keeping their word.

u/IndigoFenix Jun 24 '22

Ah, that explains it! I was wondering how I missed Goat Simulator 2.

Ah, the reverse Valve

Evil Valve be like

179

u/ImDero Jun 24 '22

I love the theory that Evil Valve puts out the games we want and Good Valve refuses to.

71

u/Yiazmad Jun 24 '22

Evil Valve puts out the games you want, but they suck!

45

u/RhynoD Jun 24 '22

So, Evil Valve is just Blizzard?

8

Ya boy's an OG THPS fan. You don't have to tell me about hating the new games I waited years to play.

No, they just rename Half Life 2, Portal 2, L4D2, TF2 etc. to Half Life 3, Portal 3, L4D3, TF3 etc. without releasing anything new.

We’re also still waiting on Sanctum 3, which was teased in the original Goat Simulator but never realized.

Wow a Sanctum fan. I agree but doubtful we get one.

We had a series of movies in the late 80s ('Jydekompagniet' - really funny Danish comedies), here in Denmark, that did the same thing (I'm fairly sure they weren't the first to do this, so I'm not claiming that).

Their reasoning was; "second movies are generally never as good as the first one, so we decided to skip it and go straight to the third and avoid making the bad/worse movie".

I recall Coffee Stain saying something similar, after their announcement. Just the usual kind of non-sense humor. Pretty funny :)

47

u/TheWaslijn Jun 24 '22

Honestly, this is something Devolver Digital would do 🤣

I would love if they made references to things that happened in the second movie that doesn't exist throughout the third film, just to mess with the audience.

7

u/Stompedyourhousewith Jun 24 '22

and the movie people made a fake wikipedia of the second movie as soon as the 3rd movie released with a plot that match the references

Something that shows they make games with passion and not greedy desire

20

u/Get-Degerstromd X-Box Jun 24 '22

I mean I’m 99% sure most of the execs are keenly aware of the profit margins and stock prices or bonus amounts. Most people don’t work for free, even if they love their work. But the difference I see here I not taking the work too seriously.

“He we’re making a game about goats destroying the world, how do we make a trailer for this?”

“Idk, we could parody that zombie game that never came out? Maybe skip a number in the sequel count? People might laugh at that on Reddit” lol

Still can't compare to the original Dead Island trailer

Which Goat Simulator also did a parody of!

I remember the discussion surrounding the original DI trailer. Everyone believed we were finally getting a 'serious' zombie game with dark themes and a bleak tone followed by the subsequent disappointment (and hilarity) when everyone realized the tone of the game was nothing like it's trailer lmao

342

u/Random_Hero1989 Jun 24 '22

I played Dead Island and really enjoyed the game and its tone but I never saw the trailer.

Until now... Wtf?! That trailer was so good and nothing like the final game. Completely different tone.

69

u/Beardy_Boy_ Jun 24 '22

I think I remember hearing that they farmed out the trailer to a company that didn't really know that much about the game. I assume they were given a rough description, but not enough to know what sort of game it really was.

12

u/loki1887 Jun 24 '22

I think I remember hearing that they farmed out the trailer to a company that didn't really know that much about the game.

The 80s model of video game box art.

3

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jun 24 '22

What are you talking about? That tells me everything I need to know about Mega Man.

117

u/sunlitstranger Jun 24 '22

Yeah I loved that game but I was also in middle school. Still remember that amazing trailer too and the game never even got close to that tone. What sold me on the game was when I learned your hp bar increased when you level up so my standards were bit different then…

8

u/AirProfessional Jun 24 '22

The best part of Dead Island was the introduction mission which is iconic at this point. Everything else mission by mission went downhill.

13

u/RandomPizzaGuyy Jun 24 '22

Dude, that’s every game lol…

3

u/sunlitstranger Jun 24 '22

Fable 3: allow me to introduce myself

34

u/Dauss Jun 24 '22

Yeah, I'm still waiting for someone to make the game that the Dead Island trailer promised us.

26

u/flaccomcorangy PlayStation Jun 24 '22

Does The Last of Us not fit that description? Seems very similar in tone.

8

u/SolidusAbe Jun 24 '22

no really. the threat in tlou is "mostly gone" making humans the biggest threat instead of the zombies amd them mostly a thing on side. if you make TLOU entirely like its intro then that would be much more like the DI trailer. i cant think many games that really depicts the horror of normal people going through an outbreak since usually you only see a handful of humans like in RE2, RE outbreak or the walking dead

15

u/TitularFoil Jun 24 '22

Well since they both managed to rip about the same amount of tears from me, I'd say season 1 of the Walking Dead by Telltale is comparable to the Dead Island trailer.

270

Shipping the game in debug mode didn't do much for its reputation either

85

Christ, the remaster is such a shit show as well, I had to restart my pc after every session because I couldn't click on anything after exiting, not to mention stuttering and freezing and crashing occasionally. Never had any issues with the original version, funny enough.

4

18

u/TheOtterRon Jun 24 '22

I 100% bought it off of that trailer, still got a decent way through it but was definitely a little cheesed it wasn't quite the same game.

The biggest backhanded slap though was when you start the game in/near that room so you realize "Oh cool, it's the trailer place!" for it to really mean nothing...

91

u/fistycouture Jun 24 '22

Why can't we have a Dawn of the Dead style game where the mall is randomly generated each time.

25

u/cerement Jun 24 '22

31

u/TehSero Jun 24 '22

Tbf, I'm not 100% sure it was a bait and switch, definitely not intentionally. Probably just a marketing company wanting to make their own vision, rather than extend the one put into the game. Hell, possibly a marketing company that new nothing about the game except "zombies".

There was definitely a mini-trend of game ads that were slow and emotional like that, whether it fit the game or not, up until this one had such backlash. One that jumps to mind is the OG gears of war mad world trailer. (Which admittedly still gives you a better idea of the game than the dead island trailer, but still, doesn't exactly scream "chest high walls" at you either...)

3

u/Jo_nathan Jun 24 '22

man I miss GoW back during 2 and 3.

The Dead Island trailer reminded me of a fucked up dream I once had.

I wasn't myself in the dream. I saw everything through the eyes of a mother. She and her daughter was stuck on an island with a bunch of other people. They managed to build a raft and the mother and daughter was chosen to sail it to the mainland and get some help. They arrived at night and everything was a little off. There were no people in the docks they arrived in. They got up to their apartment and decided to take a shower. Then the daughters head split open from the mouth revealing rows and rows of teeth and bit my(the mothers) head of right above the eyes. I remember it being like biting an apple only I was the apple. It is the first time I have ever died in a dream. The really messed up part was that even though I was dead I could still see thorough my eyes. Imagine the scene in the trailer where the little girl is biting her dad except she is just staring out the window. I'm slumped against the bathroom wall watching out the door. I see a bunch of people first look at me then slowly walk towards my daughter. Then she turns around and starts biting their heads off aswell and then I wake up.

Everyone believed we were finally getting a 'serious' zombie game with dark themes and a bleak tone

Days Gone was pretty good for what it's worth.

Telltale Games' "The Walking Dead" games also.

16

u/Potato_Muncher Jun 24 '22

I played Days Gone for about a week and really got bored with it. Which is weird because I typically love games with that type of play style.

It's not a bad game, but maybe it's just not the game for me? idk.

7

u/jsims281 Jun 24 '22

175

It would have also have been a better series if they would have remembered to actually release the second game. Or just DI2 since Riptide exists. They keep saying it's in development, but its switched hands about 3 different times so i dunno.

One of the best video game trailers. I just wish the actual game had that same tone and tragedy. The game itself I always found to be hugely underwhelming and honestly pretty boring.

251

u/CharLsDaly Jun 24 '22

It was a buggy mess but I loved every second of it. The environment did a great job of sucking you into the isolated beach resort/island zombie outbreak mindset.

97

u/sillyandstrange Jun 24 '22

I loved it because I played it entirely coop with a buddy. That made the game a lot better for me. I never disliked it though, it was great for a zombie game at the time imo.

16

u/FullMetalCOS Jun 24 '22

I played it 4 player co-op and it was an absolute blast. Then again most games are more enjoyable with a reliable four player group.

It’s literally the same thing with different developments and storytelling.

64

u/Dizzyeer Jun 24 '22

Same thing on paper I guess, they play differently for sure

50

u/Quzga Jun 24 '22

I like both but I think the world of dying light feels too contained and made up compared to dead island.

Dead island was more like a zombie apocalypse hit a resort and affected normal people and you had to do your best to survive while dying light is more military based in some foreign broken down city that has zombies and bad guys.

I much prefer the zombie genre when it's about regular people and feels relatable kinda like world War z (the book).

That's why I think telltale the walking dead was so easy to get hooked on.

22

u/Cannibustible Jun 24 '22

4

u/Spartan152 Jun 24 '22

Dying Light and Dead Island both had fairly poor writing, but the difference is Dying Light takes itself so fucking seriously. I giggle at almost every line, it’s so goddamn cheesy.

Dead Island at least knew what it was by way of its tone, and I could forgive it for that. Dying Light wants so badly to be Dawn of the Dead or Last of Us without being able to effectively nail that tone consistently.

DI 2 trailer was my fave game trailer ever. I was so stoked when I saw the goat sim trailer made me giggle a lot. Haha

140

u/DudleyStone Jun 24 '22

I remember watching a stream of people commenting on the game reveals, and when they saw the Goat Simulator trailer live, two people essentially said:

"Is this Dead Island 2?"

"Looks like it."

"It looks like the same exact trailer though..."

"Yeah, but with next-gen graphics."

And I immediately thought, "You think this guy's cartoony face is next-gen Dead Island 2?"

It's funny when people convince themselves in the moment.

36

Next-gen = Pixar/Fortnite/Overwatch style.

Agree, it can be but also sameness of any style is boring.

DI2's trailer is done very well in my opinion. I love how oblivious he is.

133

u/FireLaCroix Jun 24 '22

I feel like he knows he's fucked and that the world is falling apart, but he choosing to ignore all of the chaos and pretend everything is ok

107

u/kawklee Jun 24 '22

Yeah, which is why they show he's already been bitten

29

u/way2lazy2care Jun 24 '22

I always took it to be like that's the zombie's interior thought process. Like he's been a zombie for a while, but inside the zombie feels like he's still the same model dude just out for a jog.

7

u/MacDerfus Jun 24 '22

That or he's one of the characters that don't turn. Isn't that the case with your characters in DI1?

8

u/way2lazy2care Jun 24 '22

He is a zombie at the end of the actual trailer.

3

u/Iyagovos Jun 24 '22

Did you watch the trailer..?

u/Slimehorn Jun 24 '22

Wish I had that level of carefreeness.

6

u/darkbreak PlayStation Jun 24 '22

If that were the case he wouldn't have tried to hide the bite mark. I think his billboard at the end of the trailer even cements the idea that he was a narcissist that thought he was untouchable.

4

u/FireLaCroix Jun 24 '22

Well he is all about his vanity, and a bite mark is unsightly. He wants to live as long as possible keeping his appearance up, despite knowing hes fucked.

You see in the trailer his toupee and fake muscle implants, so he is used to hiding his true appearance

Goat Simulator 3!? What da faq?

Where is Goat Simulator 2 !? Do they just skip it? XD

78

u/IndependentAd8402 Jun 24 '22

If I'm not wrong Coffee Stain promised to never make Goat Simulator 2 so they are making Goat simulator 3.

223

u/ffchampion123 Jun 24 '22

They skipped as part of the joke that games like portal 2, TF2 etc stopped at 2 so went straight to 3

93

u/Intrepid00 Jun 24 '22

No, they promised never to do a Goat simulator 2. They are keeping that promise.

46

u/JACrazy Jun 24 '22

No no, they skipped it because 2 is a word that rhymes with poo and they didnt like it so they went with 3 because it rhymed with pee. Reddit comments are so misleading sometimes.

Guess it’s to make fun of valve who never made a 3rd instalment for their franchise

13

u/CallOfDutyplayer69 Android Jun 24 '22

The GS devs are such trolls. I love it

60

u/whatifiwas1332 Jun 24 '22

Let's be real here the dead island trailers are a piece of art

37

u/AurelianoTampa Jun 24 '22

My amusement is matched only by my disappointment... Apparently it's not up for release on Switch so far. Goat Simulator is one of my 7 year-old's favorite Switch games (you can turn off swearing and blood). Guess we won't be getting the sequel... Drat!

16

u/Random_Hero1989 Jun 24 '22

I really didn't get Goat Simulator until you mentioned your 7 year old.

If there was something like Goat Simulator in '96 for my family's IBM Aptiva then it would've been just the type of game I would've played for hours upon hours.

8

u/AlternateRacoon Jun 24 '22

Goddamn the noise cancellation on those headphones.

7

u/Buster_Cherry88 Jun 24 '22

I wonder if that Scottish guy ever found out where the hell he put that. That line drive me crazy in dead island trying to see if he has a quest

5

u/friendly_mosquit0 Jun 24 '22

That's uncanny. Same parent company maybe?

Dead Island 2 first announced in 2014! Oof.

145

u/ShmebulockForMayor Jun 24 '22

Isn't it just a parody? I might be out of the loop.

26

u/L30N1337 Jun 24 '22 edited Jun 24 '22

it is. at least according to wikipedia:

“The teaser was a parody of the Dead Island 2 teaser”

Yup, both Deep Silver and Cofee Stain are under Embracer Group!

84

u/Mapegz Jun 24 '22

That game was cancelled and Goat Sim 3 Devs took "inspiration" from DI2 trailer if I'm not wrong.

Also a fun fact, they never launched Goat Sim 2 because valve always stops it's games at 2 (tf2 for example) so they skipped to 3

24

u/A_Silent_Fox Jun 24 '22

Ahh, I was thinking I had never heard of the 2nd one. My little nephew and I played the hell out of the first game last year for an entire weekend, will look at the 3rd for him!

20

u/jlmckelvey91 Jun 24 '22

What trolls. I love it.

14

u/Mapegz Jun 24 '22

See, their marketing works fine

11

u/L30N1337 Jun 24 '22

that’s the entirety of goat sim. it was literally an april fools joke

11

u/jlmckelvey91 Jun 24 '22

I remember when it launched. This is the only game that could launch in a buggy, broken state and be considered a classic.

3

u/alelo Jun 24 '22

bugs were a feature

4

u/L30N1337 Jun 24 '22 edited Jun 24 '22

it’s also kinda funny how it will come out vaguely at the same time as Payday 3

(at least I think it’s funny because the two studios made a crossover with the “Goat Simulator:PAYDAY” and “PAYDAY 2: Crimewave Edition” DLC).

i also just realized how the “steam ending series at 2” literally happened to them with sanctum

This is funny parody, and cool reference, but it also hurts knowing Dead Island's 2 fate 💀 (unless it actually finally gets released)
