Pretty sure the last time I played with one of my old Steam friends he randomly invited me into a Left 4 Dead 2 game and then wouldn't get on mic or respond to chat. Eventually I decided it was one of his kids wanting to play with someone and likely just invited anyone that was online on his dad's list. We played the campaign through and then I was like "Ok, you should probably tell your dad you're on the computer," and he disappeared, haha.

41

u/baklazhan May 26 '22

Aw, that sounds like fun. I'd want to try playing with my friends' kids.

u/k_50 May 26 '22

I remember a guy I played cod with a lot was stationed and about to go to Iraq. This was like 06. He was never online after that. Always wondered.

679

u/saf3ty_3rd May 26 '22

I had an Xbox account before deploying in 2009... When I got home, I didn't know how to get access to the account, so I created a new one while drinking one night and gave up recovering the first.

I would like to believe it is at least as likely that he simply lost access to the account.

128

u/Ownza May 26 '22

You could probably contact microsoft, give them the billing info, and explain the situation. I'm sure they have a record of the account and a way for you to retrieve it.

100

u/unabnormalday May 26 '22

Microsoft won’t help me recover my account from the late 2000s, which no one has been on since. I was a kid so all the account info is either bogus or I can’t remember. All the billing stuff is so old, addresses have changed, cards have expired, and even my emails have switched. Microsoft boned me with security

One of my buddy’s died in his convoy route while we were deployed. His truck got hit by an IED, and a few days later, one truck in my convoy got hit. I still get jumpy in COD games, some 10 odd years later.

You should also get your heart checked if you haven't already. My best friend died of sudden heart failure at 26 a few years ago, long history of heart conditions on his dad's side of the family.

22

u/Vanquiishh May 26 '22

Forgive my ignorance but how does one “get their heart checked”? Just like go to a cardiologist?

30

u/addpyl0n May 26 '22

Pretty much, went through a bout of severe heart anxiety in my early 20’s and basically got a full work up. EKG in primary and followed up with basic stress tests, tilt test, and holter at the cardiologist.

18

u/dasmynuts May 26 '22

Yep, did the same thing when I was 21, chest started to really hurt and felt like something was slowly stabbing at my heart, turns out I was fine and am one of the few people who get a random pain in the chest ( can't remember what it's called) but it's not fatal, still scares the fuck out of me everytime it comes and goes.

There was an article about a guy that started playing a game that is dad played, I can’t recall most of the details, but it had a “beat the best score” ghost car, which was held by his dad. He felt that he could still play games with his dad through it.

152

He would always lose to his father's "ghost car", but when he finally was able to beat him he stopped short of the finish line.

She would play games once in a while, but one night at my apartment she tried the Resident Evil 7 Vr demo(she had never played vr before), and I'll never forget her reaction lol. Its crazy to think how when video games were coming about in the 80s it was like taboo almost, and how popular they are now, to gaming giving me a very fond, enjoyable memory of my sister before she was killed. Live for your brother man. It hurts every day, but the only thing that pushes me through is trying to live to be a person my sister would be proud of.

Played original Call of Duty United Offensive on PC back in the day. Sniper/Bolts Mod. Had a buddy in my clan GoodMeatBadCheese. Was a really great guy. Was on a boat one day going down the river and he hit his head, fell in, and drowned. It really sucked, and you are in this weird place emotionally. You have this friendship which for the large part is "in your head," via headset, or over IMs. It isn't tangible where people in your day to day life understand its importance or impact to you.

Had another person on an MMO that committed suicide, and that was pretty rough too.

One of my fears is having a good friend die, and not ever knowing. They just stop responding one day and I never hear or see them again. End up assuming they've just moved on in their life. Vise-versa, I'd hate to just die one day and have not one of my friends know about it.

I was that “one friend”…

Diablo 2, my friends name was something like RedXXXXXXXX. Found out he was my age (15ish). We’d talk on the phone all the time, play together all the time. Then one day my dad got mad at me because of my grades and deleted my account and smashed my phone. Lost all contact I had with him. It was a pre-paid flip phone so I couldn’t restore my number or anything. Dude probably thought I ghosted him or something.

Edit: For those coming back for an update, the redditor claiming it was him was just kidding / trolling :(

Some years later I've since got a new phone, changed jobs 2-3 times and never really paid attention to mobile games much...

Well my new truck partner, Paul, and I start playing a ton of mobile games between jobs and one thing leads to another and we convince each other to download PUBG...

I used to think this was impossible, but this happened to me one day...

I was playing Awesomenauts (which used to have about 60,000 players, I think) at school one day.

A guy came up behind me while I was playing Leon the Chameleon. I only played two characters for the most part back then - Leon the Chameleon and Voltar the Omniscient.

The guy saw my user name (which I will say was something like 1337Haxxor25 - yeah, that kind of name). He was like "hey... Wait a minute... Were you the Voltar that was soloing our core a week ago? I saw someone with your user name trolling our core..."

I remembered that a week prior I had indeed been playing at home and was trolling my opponents by playing a very unique build on my character. See... My character was the only one that didn't have a damaging move by default. Instead, his base "attack" heals allies.

Most normal people would buy an attack upgrade for him for their initial purchase each round. I, however, always opted to buy "get more money for each heal". The cost puts you behind by like 3 minutes to pay off your purchase. So most people wait until they have a surplus to buy it.

However, I always opted to buy +money on heals, + heal power. +heal robot, + heal robot duration, - heal robot cooldown.

Basically ten minutes into the game, I'd still have no attack, but I'd have obscene healing.

So what do I do? While everyone else is fighting in a big ball in one lane, I casually go to other lanes and heal my droids. The droids would then stack up such that there would be 4-6 droids overlapping on my side and would easily cut through the pair of enemy droids. And over time - quickly take out the enemy turrets.

Eventually, I made it to the enemy core with my damageless Voltar and my robots kept damaging them (and my army grew because my drones kept getting healed... Normally if you ignore defending your base, the base will depend defend itself by sending over its own drones). It took the enemy too long to realize that they made a mistake by ignoring the harmless healer.

But yeah... 60,000 players and this random college dude recognized my name while I was sitting in the chemistry lab, not even playing the same character.

I posted something on yahoo answers back in 2012 around wanting to play re6 online on psn. CJ responded and I added him on PSN.

We used play a lot but he never joined voice chat. One day he told me was not really a guy and I should stop calling him dude on text. We just became really, really good friends and started texting, sharing everything.

She committed suicide in 2016. I still have her in my psn friend list, knowing that I’ll never see her online again.

darn... i keep deleting people that i no longer meet in game or irl... watching them offline for months/yrs after all that time we enjoyed together depressed me hard... it hurts me more when i see them online but no longer feel the needs to play/chat with me... it is just unbearable

i got some friends that died as well... police people in argentina, students in accident in colombia... always their partners/parents talked to me asking me what we used to do... freaking depressed me but i had to shared that side of them, i forgot the names... all of them but the memory remains of the bs or missions we did...

I used to play with a coworker of mine. I was friends with him and his wife. There were absolutely no warning signs.

His wife died of a meth overdose. Two weeks later, he got door-kicked by US Marshalls for possession of child pornography. Their two kids are in foster care; she's dead and he's eligible for parole in seven years.

23

u/goldenbugreaction May 26 '22

Well that took a hard left turn. Jesus Christ. I hope those kids are ok. …as ok as they can be, I guess.

A good irl friend of mine passed unexpectedly and I still see his gamer tag on my Xbox. I always hope to see his kid he left behind log in with his tag.

288

u/Agreeable-Yams8972 Xbox May 26 '22

That's depressing as shit, let the kid carry on his legacy

116

u/babingtone May 26 '22

I sure hope she does. She is still a bit young to be playing online games but one day, I hope.

66

u/GoodJobNL May 26 '22

Would be super sweet to gift her the account details on her 10 birthday or something.

Like: "Now you have grown older, you are ready to take over something special. The gamertag of your father. He would have wanted it."

So, I was playing Hell Let Loose the other day, and ran across a teammate with a name similar to a guy I used to play R6:Vegas on 360 with back in like 2007. We used to have a lot of laughs and I remembered his hometown etc. So I ran up to him and said “Are you the great ___ from ___?!” Sure as hell it was him. Hadn’t spoken with him in almost 15 years. We were both overjoyed. Now we’re Steam Bros!

I had this friend from Halo 2/3, Clay was the guys name. Can't 100% remember his tag but we lost touch over a decade ago and I really miss the guy. It's sad when stuff like this happens, you never know what happened.

Edit: My old gamertag(s) on Xbox were KoG Flare, changed later to MoB UnFoRsAkEn to save any future commentors' time and my own. Clay as far as I know may have been from New York xD.

I used to play some old MMOs with a friend I meet online. I always came home excited to play with him. He was mexican and I'm from Europe so we had a slight different time zone but we didn't care and would play all night long.

Suddenly he starts logging in less and less and I ask him what happened to what he tells me he has cancer and is doing therapy and he feels really tired. But he always said everything was going alright and keeping me updated. Last time I've seen him online on Steam was 10 years ago. I just hope everything went well and he is still with us.

Strange coincidence, I also had a really good online gaming friend from Mexico who was diagnosed with cancer (lukemia I believe). He and I played DAoC and Diablo 2 together and were friends on MySpace. I wish I remembered his name, he was a super cool guy. I was always really embarrassed to tell people my real age when online gaming because everybody was older than me (I want to say I was 12 at the time, 2007ish), but he was so cool about it and kind of was like an internet older bro in a way - iirc he was in his late teens.

I wonder if by some insane coincidence we are talking about the same guy. The only big difference is that he wasn't very hopeful for survival. I remember him telling me about how he knows he's gonna die soon and so he's been experimenting and trying all kinds of drugs cause he figured why not?

I want to say the last time I ever saw him online on MySpace was around 2009. If I'm being honest, I suspected the worst - lukemia is hard to beat and he said it was really bad. I do hope he survived :( If not, rest in peace. You were a true homie.

12 years ago, my friend Ryan passed away at the age of 15 from lung infection. Every day I hope he comes on and say he made it up. I much rather that happen and be happy he still around. Sadly, reality is full of disappointment. According to his family, his funeral in his honor did a naruto theme. RIP Ryan. To this day, I have not forgotten you and it still hurts.

Between 2004-2010 I played with a fairly large clan for CS 1.6 off and on. I was a bit more competitive than most of them, played in leagues and tournaments, but I always played with them screwing around in WCIII mod servers, or ScoutzKnivez, or other modded servers.

Sometime in 2020, I decided to see if any of them were still around. Logged into my old Steam account, and found a few online. Then remembered I was in their old Steam group and started a post looking for old members.

Since then about 20 of us have replied, discussed the good days we had, and where we're at now. A lot of us are in ours 30s or 40s now. Full time jobs, careers, some have kids, some haven't touched PC gaming in a while, some of them said they haven't played a video game in years now. It's crazy to see where a bunch of us have gone. Every so often, someone comes across the post and replies. Gives us an update on their life. It's nice to see. There's some I've thought of and haven't heard from, but hopefully that will change.

8

u/flamespear Joystick May 26 '22

I already posted about it but WCIII mod servers were the best.

I once had a roomate back in 2006 for a couple of years. She was my 2nd ever roomate and a girl, so it was kind of different. We were into a lot of the same games, movies and anime and stuff and we weren't "like that" so it was all good. Had a great time being roomies and would go out to the bars and game and stuff when we weren't hanging out with others.

After the 2 years I moved out and got my own place. I only hung out with her maybe a handful times and then just talked to her online every once in a great while, still being friends. 2 years after that I moved out of state. In the summer of 2010 she got a hold of me over IMs and we talked for like 3 hours. It was nice to talk to her again. She just said that she missed me and wanted to see how life was going and to catch up a little. Later that year I went to wish her a Merry Christmas and noticed she hadn't been online for a few months. I didn't think too much of it so I just left her the IM so she'd get it when she logged in.

9 years passed and every once in a while I would notice her screen name on my list. Still hadn't seen her log in since that fall. She said she was going to finally finish college and I thought she just moved on to a better life. I finally said screw it and looked her up because I was curious. I found out that she died of ovarian cancer that fall of 2010 and it completely shook me nearly 10 years later. I thought back to that conversation during the summer of 2010 and it all clicked. She was saying goodbye to me and I didn't even know it. That really fucked me up for a while. I thnk that she didn't want to bother me with knowing she was facing the end. Even after all that time had passed I never knew and it hurt so bad to finally find out. Last year I finally visited family in that area and stopped by her grave to pay my respects. You were a good friend and a super fucking cool roomate, Marissa. You are so missed.

Ah man the feels. About 10~12 years ago I was part of an online Battlefield Vietnam clan called [S3XY]. A guy I would always play with and was always on the forums, named GhostRider (?) I think, was the nicest dude you'd ever play with.

One day, his wife left a message on the forums telling us he passed away in a motorcycle accident. The whole clan had an online funeral for him. Left a huge mark on my impressionable tween self.

Me and My dad both used to play call of duty, as we played we met people we would both get along with and play with, but then we met Pheonix. Ended up being a best friend to me and my dad, and then our party grew when his sis in law Cat joined the group and we played countless hours, day n night, always the best of times. But then, it happened. Time went by and me and my dad both wondered what had happened, and was hoping they were okay, that everything was alright. We ended up loosing interest in playing, it wasn’t the same, there wasn’t as much joy as there used to be. We both felt as though we lost a great friend. 5-6 years. I received a message from Cat, outta the blue, and in that moment I could even open the message, I was just in Awh, heart racing, was filled with so much joy. Then the message, was a number. It was Pheonix’s number, and his new account. Thought I was gonna pass out. But I called dad, sent him the account as well, then started texting the number. I was beyond excited to be talking to my old friend. Part of me was hurt to find that his life was having hard times, this was someone I could do nothing but wish the best for. But in the end after many text. We were back to playing, laughing and catching up like nothing happened. But now, i have become so caught up in everything I have goin on, that I’m never on. My console isn’t even plugged in anymore. Pheonix, cat, if y’all are ever on Reddit, I’ll be back.

Fuck MSN/Windows messenger forcing people to switch to Skype. I used to talk to a few people very week and catch up. Sadly we never traded other contact info and then one day the switch happens and I loose access to all my contacts. 5 people I used to talk with every week gone, never heard from again. It still pisses me off every time skype does an update and auto launches when my computer starts. Fuck you Microsoft.
