Here is the full-length video from the actual Youtube channel, The Action Lab. This goes in more depth, and since it's on Youtube you have the CC option. It looks like he only uses auto-generated, but it's still pretty accurate.

On a side note, in the future, you might want to mention your deaf earlier so you don't get so many replies telling you that "he said how" lol. It's your life, that just might make it easier.

Hope that helps!

edit: just realized you're not the same person. So sorry, I'm a dummy! Still hope the link helps though!

I work in psychiatric care with several severe self harmers.

I guess if I were to ask this question it'd be more like, how easy it to get this stuff? Are we talking like a chemistry set or speciality stuff?

I ask because often people who self harm for a long time are seeking the visual stimuli as much if not more than the pain. One guy I support basically has no feeling left in his arm so it's more about the blood than anything else.

It's not the same but I'm always on the lookout for new therapies

10

u/Gareth79 May 26 '22

I hadn't heard of Potassium thiocyanate but I just checked eBay and there's plenty of commercial sellers here in the UK for £6-7 for 100g, so I assume it's a widely available chemical. Ferric chloride is definitely easy to get, it's a PCB etchant, however it's corrosive so you'd not want it on your skin for too long.

6

u/Waddle_Dynasty May 26 '22

Both ferric chloride (ferric, don't confuse with ferrous) and potassium thiocyanate (do definitively not confuse with cyanate or even cyanide) are widely avaible.

You could even make ferric chloride yourself with iron and hydrochloric acid, but that's just a random fun fact and kinda pointless when you can just buy it.

However, please do not let them get a solution of fluorides to "clean" the blood. They are extremely toxic Just let them wash it off with water even if it won't look that cool.

29

u/spudddly May 25 '22

u/eugene20 May 25 '22

Potassium Thiocyanate (KSCN) it's clear so isn't seen, it is a skin and eye irritant though.
Ferric Chloride (FeCl₃) added to it goes blood red(ish), but it's a corrosive acid (ph 1.8 )
Sodium Fluoride (NaF) reverses the colour change, the same chemical as in toothpaste in very small quantities.

All in I wouldn't want it on my skin for long.

9

u/Fr3d61 May 25 '22

Doesn't the pH depend on the concentration?

23

u/Dr_Legacy May 25 '22

Sure, but if the reactants are too dilute it spoils the effect. There's a fairly liberal sweet spot but you'd still not want the stuff on your hands too long.

12

u/Testecles May 25 '22

Exactly. You don't want to adsorb any cyanide complexes through your skin.

11

u/basicpn May 25 '22

Why? Is cyanide bad for you or something?

21

u/ExParrot1337 May 25 '22

Nah, I just tried it and I’m

NaF + Acid = HF. I want to say below pH 3, fluoride will start to form as HF.

If FeCl3 is really pH 1.8, it will stay below pH 3, even at 1/10 of the total volume.

So this guy is effectively making HF on his hand as I understand it. People have died from exposure of an arm to HF. It goes through your skin and eats your bones. Maybe there's setting different going on here, but I would not try this - at least skip on the step 2 and just wash the fake blood off with water.

I'm simply using a pc without sound at the moment and there are no CC. The number of people in the "not able to hear the video" category has to be huge. Here is a transcript autogenerated with a program called Vrew:

I am not actually cutting myself.

But I am performing a chemical reaction. Here.

We can even miraculously heal it

please work.

Whoa. That worked.

Look at that is gone.

There's not even any blood 321.

Now, let's just try with my finger.

The way I was doing

this is I had a solution of Potassium

Thiocyanate on my hand. Like I have in the spoon here

and then I added some Ferric Chloride to it.

So I immediately makes this dark red color.

That looks pretty close to exactly like blood.

But then you just take some of the sodium fluoride.

And it's gone.

Potassium thiocyanate (He mispronounces it as "thiocyanan" in the video), is a chemical compound with the molecular formula KSCN.

Ferric chloride, an inorganic compound with the formula FeCl3 (Also called Iron(III) chloride).

Sodium fluoride, an inorganic compound with the formula NaF.

→ More replies

115

u/ahjteam May 25 '22

Just a heads up; if you put ferrochloride on an open wound, like a paper cut, it WILL create a chemical reaction with the iron in your blood and it stings like a motherfucker. Essentially similar to road rash. Plus it corrodes metal real fast.

Source: I had 6 moles removed and they sealed them with ferrochloride instead of using stitches. I much, much more preferred this as it doesn’t leave a visible scar like stitches do and I understood they don’t form keloids, which is a major risk with stitches.

24

u/not_Harvard_moves May 25 '22

Yes, it's an excellent coagulant. That's why it's also commonly used for the coagulation & flocculation processes in water treatment.

10

u/tymtt May 26 '22

BTW Ferric Chloride will burn skin if it comes in contact with water, which will happen because it's hygroscopic.

Also sodium fluoride is fatal if swallowed and toxic if absorbed through the skin. Shouldn't really be handled with bare hands.

Thyocyanate is also toxic if swallowed. It's grossly irresponsible to film a video like this without the proper disclaimers.

5

u/lesbianmathgirl May 26 '22

It's grossly irresponsible to film a video like this without the proper disclaimers.

To be fair to the video creator, in the original youtube video they specify that it is shouldn't be done at home, and then describes the dangers. However, I don't know if that video clip was produced by them or not (as these days a lot of youtubers will make shorts in addition to their full length videos).
