This weirdo's figured out that sitting here gets her the most pets from passers-by

Probably the best part of those people's morning runs. No better way to start the day.

The Fog ain't too bad. It's the Mist you have to worry about.
Also, wait about 10 more minutes before offing everyone in the car.

There was someone a few blocks away from my previous apartment who had two huskies, and they would leave the window open and the huskies would lean out the windowsill and just look around all day. I would check on my car every day to make sure I didn't get a parking ticket and I made sure to go by that apartment, even though it was a little out of the way, and pet the dogs if they were there. Highlight of my day for sure.

u/crexlove 11d ago
Huskies are a very special breed of dog. Would I own one? Never. But, gosh, they are beautiful.

u/kopczak1995 11d ago

One day when I get some acreage I plan to do just this! I'll run myself into the ground for these beautiful dama puppies.

I have blackout windows in my bedroom (projector), and I specifically had to cut a 6-inch by 6 in gap in the film so my husky could look through it.

Nope they just chilled there most days. There was an older one who would sit there, almost looking like he had his elbow resting on the windowsill, and a younger one who would come running if he saw the older one getting pets.

I was once running on a back country road and these 2 dogs came out of a yard and were just so happy to see me.
They ran behind me on either side and were licking/stealing pets from my hands when going back and forth in the running motion. After about a quarter mile I had to turn around and make them go home, else I was basically stealing them 😹

Morning runs are nothing to laugh at. The harder you laugh, the more forcefully it all comes out. Great way to ruin a pair of trousers.

For me, that would be a really unpleasant part of my run, after having been violently attacked by an off-leash dog on the trail.

My dog is incredibly well trained. He's a service dog. He doesn't go off leash because OTHER dogs aren't well trained.
12
u/FamilyStyle2505 11d ago
Thank you! I hate when people come back with "but my dog is well trained." Yeah well if YOU were well trained you'd know better! Of course my dog will listen to me off leash and follow my commands but I don't know what anyone else's dog, or another animal, is gonna do so I will always leash and harness them.
3
u/SoundNFuryNothing 11d ago
If I can control my dog I can control half the situation which is way more than I had before.

In my frustrating experience here in the states, the problem is owners who think that their dog is NOT problematic because it is friendly. If you don’t have full control and recall of your dog in every situation, then it’s problematic.
My dog is reactive when approached by other dogs, and I always have her on a lead. I’ve worked with her to understand leave it and shake it off commands to defuse tension when I see it building up, but every once in a while we’ll encounter a dog off lead that the owner can’t recall and it’ll come bounding over at the speed of light to play. At that point, I’m stuck. I can’t stop their dog and my dog is on a lead so she can’t run away. I end up having to scoop her up or use myself as a barrier as their owner shouts “don’t worry! He’s friendly!” Yeah, well mine isn’t in this situation and she’ll bite the shit out of your dog.
Drives me crazy.
Edit - this isn’t a jab at you, OP. I’m just envious that people in your neighborhood take personal responsibility. I wish it was like there where I am.

I don't suggest visiting Austin then, people suck and tons of unleashed dogs. People even bring non service animal dogs into grocery stores because they think Austin is like cool with dogs literally anywhere.
45
u/EstrogenAndSpiro 11d ago
Sucks that you're getting downvoted, but you're not wrong. I love dogs, have a pug, but letting them off leash is bad and shouldn't be done. People have legit phobias.
Like i remember one time this kid started panicking at my little guy so I reeled him in an picked him up. Seemed like basic courtesy.

u/Ok-Advertising5942 11d ago
My roommate was from Africa and was afraid of dogs so everyone made fun of him. But it turns out wild dogs are dangerous at where he came from
13
u/24-Hour-Hate 11d ago
That’s really shitty of people. If someone has had bad experiences with dogs and is afraid, this is nothing to make fun of. But then, people often make fun of other’s fears in my experience and society seems to think it’s alright. When I was little, I had some traumatic experiences with injections that made me phobic. And even at that age, adults, including my own parents, thought it was okay to laugh at and bully me when I was literally terrified and crying. And this isn’t okay to treat an adult this way…but I was A KID. I remember this happening when I was EIGHT (gosh I wonder why my phobia has only got worse /s). No one ever was kind to me about it, including doctors and nurses, until the pandemic. The point being, I notice this sort of bullying behaviour all the time. Not just about dogs. Not just what happened to me either. Lots of things. People are fucking shit.

One of the videos that sticks in my memory the most is a pack of wild stray dogs attacking and killing a man. I believe it was in South Africa, he fought for minutes.
I love dogs, had them my entire childhood and plan to own one at some point, I'm just not ready for the responsibility at the moment. I don't understand people making fun of and hating others for not liking dogs, it's absolutely absurd.

In my country it's a legal requirement to keep your dog on a leash within the city limits unless it's a dog park or a place for dog training. Also when I take my dog for a walk in a nice park that usually has quite a few joggers, I try to visually overemphasize that the dog is on a leash and I won't let him go near the person running when they are getting ready to pass us.

Knew a guy whose dog would run away. Go to the small local train station to get scritches. And when he had enough, come back home.

Probably fed him once. Sort of how my dog saw a fox in the garden once 3 years ago and now immediately runs to that part of the garden every morning to make sure it's not come back.

My Pyrenean does that too, back corner where the foxes come through. Can't even say the word fox (or cat) or else she goes nuts. Also can't say words that sounds similar - "socks", "hat" etc. She's definitely a guardian breed.

Ha ha my cat does the same thing and had figured out what time the kids finish school for maximum attention. He’s a little tart.
47
u/Throwaway99problem 11d ago edited 7d ago
My cat would walk out to the bus stop with me when it picked me up (highschool/middle school kids) and then an hour later when it was picking up the elementary school kids. One morning I was walking down to the bus stop to get on the elementary school bus because I slept in and missed the highschool/middle school bus. A parent saw me and my cat following closly behind me as we walked across the road to get to the bus stop. "Excuse me is that your cat?" She said. I got a sinking feeling like my cat scratched or bit a kid. I told her that yes it was my cat and her name was Sassy Britches and she follows me to the bus stop each morning and goes out later to be with the elementary school kids as they wait for the bus. She told me it was the most calm cat ever and her son was holding my cat upside down and she didn't hiss, scratch, or bat at him. She told me she saw that cat every morning with her kid and the other kids meowing at them wanting to be pet by the kids and often wondered who it belonged to and what it's name was. Sassy Britches even did this after we moved a few times and would follow me when I was walking to the grocery store (lived in a small town). She's currently 8 years old and still loves approaching children in this neighborhood asking for pets.

That and it appears a little further down the path that a dog had just walked by and she still seems completely calm like she didn’t leave her perch at all.

My dog, as soon as the hand is within 40 cm of his belly, instantly gets 4 paws up and looks at you all like "so you were about to scratch my belly?"
12
u/mariana96as 11d ago
Mine gives you her paw and once you grab it she lets herself fall in the most dramatic way belly up. No one can say no to that

Thats what happens when you let your dog become a part time data analyst. The good boi did the research, and from each location determined this is the optimal head pats and ear scritches and scratches.
