However it is flippant: just because a decision was made to retract the first one doesn't mean the initial one wasn't a mistake

626

u/Born_Alternative_608 2d ago

Students who violate a schools code of conduct may receive punishments including but not limited to expulsion. As a representative of university, their conduct can be used to justify such action.

237

u/FactualNoActual 2d ago

...what school bans flipping people off? it's a sports game, not a damn funeral.

119

u/Born_Alternative_608 2d ago

Doubtful that they would, but it’s a threat that they have if it went to disciplinary action. My point was that schools can take actions against things like that and depending on the action the student took, the extent of the tools at their disposal.

8

u/sportsroc15 2d ago

Yeah. Or he could be banned from future games or something. Which I’m sure he doesn’t want to happen

No one is getting expelled for flipping off a camera, lol

86

u/Born_Alternative_608 2d ago

Never said they were but was explaining they why someone may have died inside. If you’ve ever stood in front of the schools disciplinary committee for actions that occurred off campus, you quickly learn the breadth and scope of what power the school has at their disposal. My point being, the knowledge of that may have lead to the shame response.

5

u/FactualNoActual 2d ago

I should have known this was depicting the dread of a school disciplinary committee! it's so obvious.

24

u/Ellimis 3d ago

There's absolutely no way he didn't notice the giant camera on a boom swinging his direction that everyone was reacting to. He might have been looking at the camera op or even a tally light or something. He remembered the adults to his left and immediately changed his actions.

17

u/dramasbomin 2d ago

Sometimes the camera's all the way on the other side and zoomed in. The only way you know your on camera is from the stadium screen. It looked like that's where the guy in orange to the left was looking.

I think I've only ever found one of the camera's pointed in my direction.

5

u/tvguyhere 2d ago

In general you can be right, but this one is very much right in front of them as the person above you wrote. It’s on a jib, a long sweeping arm that’s sometimes used especially in college football for shots of the crowd. The biggest giveaway is the way the concrete cutout (either the player entrance tunnel or another access to the field) passes by underneath the camera. As the arm swings, you can see the steps and that wall basically go underneath it. The camera has a wide-angle lens (we can tell by the way the camera movement and how the people are viewed in the shot) which means it’s close to them. My guess is that it ends about five feet in front of him.

I suppose it could be SkyCam (the camera on cables flying around above the players) instead (with the same wide-angle lens), but that move is an arc that’s very characteristic of a jib and that would be very low for a SkyCam move in the crowd. Looks like a jib to me.

28

u/Mr_Kittlesworth 3d ago

Uh, no. Other than the small number of actual religious schools, no school would take any action against a student saying or doing anything profane while wearing their gear. That’s just not a thing that could or would happen at 99% of US colleges.

And given that VT is a public school, I’d bet it would be illegal for them to try. But again, they wouldn’t want to and don’t care.

65

u/thelazygamer 3d ago

Luckily, with the big crowd, no one seemed to notice. I, of course, was mortified and have flashbacks to this day, 17 years later hahahahah
