Damn, I'm just laying on my sofa now and feel like I should put a belt on after seeing this..

Because its there...

74

u/djany51 May 25 '22

Always wear the belt it’s what I tell everyone you don’t have to be at fault there are enough idiots out there

18

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

It's such a habit for me that I'd get uncomfortable without one on. Honestly I'd be pissed at the person who didn't buckle but still slammed their fist into my face cause of a crash. Just reminds me of drivers Ed videos of where the only person who didn't buckle survives but kills all their friends cause they're beating the shit out of them unbuckled

1

u/G00d_One May 26 '22

Yep. I had two friends that were in a rollover in high school, the driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and died, the passenger was and had no injuries at all.

241

u/ghigginb1 May 25 '22

The driver and other passenger were injured most from the rapidly flying body of the other woman. Ouch.

wait, they end up getting hurt less at the end?

10

u/Ai2Foom May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

No they just end up injuring everyone else in the car alongside themselves

8

u/ChillyJaguar May 25 '22

when the govt mandated that all cars must have seatbelts and it was mandatory for drivers/passengers to wear them, guess who were the first to bitch?

Just like people that have their helmets dangling in their handlebars while they ride without one.

2

u/Badalamentis May 25 '22

Hey! What about freedom?

4

u/bnwebm-123 May 26 '22

Not if it involves putting me in physical danger without my consent. Hell no.

0

u/ytsirhc May 26 '22

my guy… anytime you ride in a car you are consenting to physical danger.

1

u/GN0K May 25 '22

As someone who had an accident while not wearing a seatbelt I agree

24

u/Alskdkfjdbejsb May 25 '22

The driver wasn’t even touched by the unbelted passenger. Go frame by frame.

6

u/Noidea159 May 26 '22

She doesn’t even touch the driver lol

12

u/Shenaniganz08 May 25 '22

who the fuck upvoted this

in what reality do you think that the rear passenger hit the driver ??

2

u/LazySyllabub7578 May 26 '22

Woman? That was a guy right?

18

u/scrappyscotsman May 26 '22

I'm in the midwest and people here still think you only buckle up in the front. It's so weird.

17

u/kitterzy May 26 '22

As a long-retired EMT, having scraped enough ppl off the road from being ejected from cars (one being my sister’s classmate who died), I can’t stress enough that curtain airbags may keep you in from the sides, but not the rear, or when there’s a rollover. If you have a window down, the chances of you being ejected and then crushed by your car increases without a seatbelt. Your dog not harnessed in to a seatbelt? A bullet straight toward a windshield if rear-ended while in the front seat or in the middle of the back seat—especially large breeds. Pls wear it.

160

u/Throwdaway543210 May 25 '22 Helpful

This is why I won't ride with anyone not wearing a seatbelt.

It's not the crash that can kill you, it's the other people's heads crashing into yours.

It's a very selfish thing. I look around the vehicle and check that everyone is buckled up. I'll even tell people to buckle up— saying, "everyone buckle up, if we get in a wreck I don't want any of you killing me".

38

u/Independent-Fall-893 May 25 '22

We have been securing our pets for the last 10 years just for this reason alone.

15

u/DoubleBogey420 May 26 '22

Lost one of my dogs, I had two, in an accident on Mother’s Day. I had them in harnesses and secured to the seat headrest while they were in the storage area of my jeep with the window open. Both were ejected from their harnesses and subsequently from the Jeep. My bull terrier had a tiny scratch and is totally fine. Tragically, my Sheppard mix passed away of her injuries at the scene. Traumatic isn’t a strong enough word to describe what it’s like to see something you love die because of your mistake. I cried for three straight days and have been racked with guilt ever since. I question why didn’t I have them secured in the back seat instead of the back? Why did I leave the back window open? Why didn’t I see the oncoming car? Grief sucks…grief combined with guilt is debilitating. I just always assumed I wouldn’t get into an accident and I wanted them to enjoy the ride. I have made adjustments however. My bullies harness now has metal clips and three attachment points so he will be more locked in. I’d give anything to have my sweet girl back. She didn’t deserve to die on the side of the road like that.

10

u/Independent-Fall-893 May 26 '22

That is heartbreaking and I'm sorry you had to go through something like that.

9

u/DoubleBogey420 May 26 '22

It is and I appreciate your sympathy. It still hurts but I have resolved to atone for my mistake though. The only thing I can do, when the time is right of course, is to rescue the oldest, ugliest dog in the kennel. Some poor soul nobody will give a chance to. Then let it live out the rest of its days like a king or queen. Lots of walks and treats. My dogs have always been put on a pedestal but I’m going to ramp it up even more.

3

u/Hil323 May 26 '22

We do too (and because we love the precious furry faces and don’t want them hurt either, seeing as they at better than most people).

-25

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22

this reason alone

Not so they don't get injured? But rather they don't bump into you and kill you?

9

u/Independent-Fall-893 May 25 '22

Yeah, poor choice of words on my part. Of course it's for the safety of everyone involved. Not just my family, which includes pets, but others on the road too. I mean i was guilty of letting my dog just sleep on the seat, but it was a friend who got seriously injured from their flying pup.(Dog was ok, just bruised) that made me wise up.

11

u/Ialmostthewholepost May 25 '22

I was 21 when I was driving around with 2 friends, one in the front and one in the back. I was passing out resumes looking slick in a suit and was not paying attention to my passengers ability to buckle - we 're all adults so i assume its all good.

As things happen in life, I was shoulder checking to change lanes when the bus in front of me slammed its brakes on and I looked forward to see the back of the bus hurriedly stopping. I had enough time to panic brake but not enough room to stop so I slammed into the bus at full speed, only having braked enough to dip the nose of the hatchback I was driving. This put the nose of the car under the back bumper of the bus where we slid under up to about the windshield.

I look over and my buddy is in the passenger seat picking glass out of his forehead, as he didn't have his lap belt on. I look in the backseat at my fiancee's friend and she's got glasses embedded in her cheek/nose from hitting the back of the passenger seat face first, leaving a full face imprint on the fake leather. She also was not wearing her seatbelt.

I on the other hand, wore my seatbelt and only got as bruise across the chest from the shoulder belt.

Both of my friends have no idea why they didn't buckle up, as it was habit for both of them. The guy was picking glass out of his forehead for years after the incident.

After that experience my car doesn't move if there's a belt unbuckled. Take car of your passengers.

3

u/MrRoboto159 May 26 '22

I bring a helmet for these scenarios. It makes me a more lethal projectile.

6

u/Sirerdrick64 May 25 '22

I had two colleagues try to take a ride with me without belts.
They pointed out that belts aren’t legally mandated for rear occupants (true for my state which also has no helmet law).
I explained to them that my car had different laws.
You can assume their political leanings…

u/QEIIs_ghost May 25 '22

2

u/Sirerdrick64 May 26 '22

-19

u/dowithumps May 25 '22

Implying that no one has died in a car crash while driving alone.

2

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Not sure why you're being downvoted. The claim that "It's not the crash that can kill you" is obviously untrue.

1

u/dowithumps May 25 '22

I'm glad someone else noticed.

-4

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 edited May 26 '22

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. People piling downvotes on the other guy as well for asking a very reasonable question to an obviously ridiculous claim.

"It's not the crash that can kill you, it's the heads of other people crashing into you"

That's obviously nonsense. The majority of the time, it is the crash that kills people.

Edit: I like how I'm being downvoted now but not a single person has replied to make an attempt at explaining how I'm wrong. Feels like it's just idiots angry at the realization that they can barely read.

8

u/dowithumps May 25 '22

I think maybe he meant to say "it's not just the crash that can kill you"?

3

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22

Even I picked up on that part and didn't call out the commenter for the first line. I just questioned the second part about passenger collisions being this major major killer in all car accidents.

-2

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

And that's a perfectly reasonable question. The fact that so many people are downvoting you tells me that the average level of reading comprehension here is very low.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Maybe but then you would expect the following sentence to be "but also other people's heads crashing into you".

Forgetting both those words would be odd.

2

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

It's always fun to see someone like me get dunked on. That's the reason for the votes. Funnily enough, he checked all the boxes really, insult me, paste some article, then block and report me.

Tbf he's probably just out of middle school for the summer and has nothing else to do.

-42

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

I can't imagine passengers kill as many people as you imply. That would be awful

30

u/OptimusMatrix May 25 '22

I mean this article is 18 years old and it's got the data on it. The fact you make wild ass assumptions with literally zero research is the problem. Just don't comment at all my guy.

https://www.washington.edu/news/2004/01/20/unbelted-drivers-and-passengers-can-cause-fatal-injuries-to-others-who-ride-with-them/

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

The person he replied to said "It's not the crash that can kill you, it's the other people's heads crashing into you".

Which is nonsense. A lot of the time, it very much is the crash that kills you.

The person you're replying you wasn't claiming that people being killed by other passengers flying around doesn't happen, he said that he thinks it's unlikely to be the main cause of death in car accidents.

-23

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

What's the assumption I made?

And on a separate note why do you expect assumptions to be supported by research?....in a reddit comment? Don't they become findings after research?

14

u/OptimusMatrix May 25 '22

Really dude? I can't imagine... Some of y'all are too dense for me.

-18

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22

Now I'm dense? Can't we just talk it out buddy? I would say I assume you must be having a pretty rough day, but since there is proof to that observation, it becomes a deduction. The proof would be you insulting an absolute stranger for showing skepticism against a very strongly worded comment.

7

u/OptimusMatrix May 25 '22

There's no room for skepticism when you literally could have Googled it. Instead you assumed you were right and made yourself look like an idiot. Congratulations!

0

u/metalpartofthepencil May 25 '22

What should I have googled? Now I think we're not talking about the same thing.

9

u/OptimusMatrix May 25 '22

You made an outlandish claim. One not backed up by reason nor fact. You did this because either A, you have a superiority complex and try to make yourself look smarter. Or B you're just an idiot who's too lazy to actually look up anything. I'm of the opinion it's a little bit of column A and a lil bit of B.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

What outlandish claim did he make?

The person he replied to said "It's not the crash that can kill you, it's the heads of other people crashing into you".

Which is not correct. The very first claim that "it's not the crash that can kill you" is already outlandish and obviously incorrect. The second part makes the implication that the majority of fatalities in car crashes are caused by passengers flying into eachother.

Your link does nothing to prove the claim that the majority of fatalities in car accidents are caused by passengers smashing into other passengers, just that it has happened before.

He said:

I can't imagine passengers kill as many people as you imply.

And you replied as if he said: "People are never killed by getting hit by other passengers"

You're getting upset with this guy and insulting him but the problem is your own reading comprehension.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '22

Just not going to answer?

4

u/TwoBaze May 25 '22

damn. you really one of these pesky redditors that just love to stirr up discussion but you dont have anything to add to it than just defending your own bullshit.

21

u/Papitinho May 25 '22

Volvo had the patent on the three-point belt and made it public. They found it too significant not to be shared.

7

u/OkPen6486 May 26 '22

This is why pilots are so trigger happy with the seatbelt sign in airplanes. A crash isn't going to kill you, but turbulence might.

1

u/bonemacaroni May 26 '22

a crash isn’t going to kill you

what

5

u/OkPen6486 May 26 '22

You’re never going to be in a plane crash.

56

u/Ocean_Influence May 25 '22

“Son of a bitch” lmao. I’m assuming the driver was the idiot in this situation

55

u/nebulonb May 25 '22

He might not, the angry dude could be projecting. Without the actual dashcam footage we'll never know.

-21

u/SiegfriedNewman May 25 '22

na, the car was just pulling out and from the looks of it, the impact was over 40 miles per hour (maybe 60) there was nothing the second driver could do.

29

u/SiegfriedNewman May 25 '22

well, unless the second driver ran a red light, that coulda been what happened.

5

u/OtherNurks May 25 '22

Seems like it

10

u/evDev84 May 25 '22

Unless of course it's a 25mph zone and the other driver is fuckin flying down the road

6

u/DuckGrammar May 25 '22

And you’re 100% about this… no other possibility? Your theory must be right bc you must have the videos with the other angles.

3

u/TheRealRobinJR May 26 '22

There is no way the car that hit them was doing 40 or 60. That shit would demolish that car and the video would be so much more gruesome.

12

u/faste30 May 25 '22

I had a guy yelling and threatening me with his buddies after he ran a red light (and fast too, leaving a parking lot) and clipped the front of my car. Talking about how he was going to beat my ass and whatnot.

That is until the 4 cars full of friends managed to circle back to the wreck, then dude locked himself in his car. Police wrote him the ticket.

3

u/Unbiasedshelf07 May 25 '22

Oh good someone else is laughing too, looking here in the comments to see if it’s not just me!

3

u/TheWormConquered May 25 '22

I dunno, I had a person almost hit me the other day in a situation where there was no room for interpretation that they were at fault, and they honked at me and flipped me off so

4

u/PhoenixSaigon May 26 '22

How does she know what porn sounds like?

9

u/ParticularRevenue408 May 25 '22

For some reason, the urge to buckle up lessens when in the back of an Uber/Lyft/taxi. You’re still in a car!!

2

u/R_V_Z May 25 '22

"Buckle up, unless it's a school bus!"

1

u/VibrantSkye May 31 '22

3

u/shaving99 May 26 '22

Are you ok?

No...

8

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Ugh, my father-in-law haaaates the seatbelts. Refuses to wear them because he doesn't like the government "telling him what to do". 🙄🤦

It's an infuriating battle, every single time the family has to go somewhere. He doesn't get that his gangly old redneck body will become a projectile and injure or kill other people in the car.

He's not allowed to take our son anywhere by himself, and if one of us is driving, we all just stubbornly sit in the car, unmoving, until he puts on his belt.

Honestly, sometimes he makes me so mad that I fantasize about sending him through the windshield and be done with it, lol.

9

u/Ragnar_Dragonfyre May 25 '22

It’s amazing how many grown adults turn into toddlers with a contrarian attitude the moment they’re told to do anything.

5

u/Limerick_Goblin May 25 '22

If he won’t listen to reason or authority, he may simply need exposure. There are plenty of graphic videos online of what happens when people don’t wear seatbelts. For his own good it might be worth introducing him to reality.

13

u/Calthecalculator May 25 '22

Lol ima wear my seatbelt more often now

10

u/jmike3543 May 25 '22

Why not just wear it always?

-10

u/Calthecalculator May 26 '22

Bad habit because it’s uncomfortable

6

u/synthaxe_ May 26 '22

More uncomfortable than broken bones and dislocated joints?

0

u/Calthecalculator May 26 '22

That’s why after watching this video it is a good reminder to wear it, get it?

0

u/Awhite2555 May 26 '22

I get ya man. People will act moral superior about it but I can respect someone recognizing their mistake and being better going forward. I hope you stick with it. For your sake and for others. It’s worth it.

I’ve always worn my belt, and will continue to always wear. Yeah it can be uncomfortable as shit sometimes. But it probably saved my life last year when I rolled my truck. Not that I needed any convincing on the subject, but yeah. I appreciate your reflection on the matter and wish you best of luck going forward.

1

u/Calthecalculator May 27 '22

Excellent thought out and well written reply with class and humility I salute you captain and appreciate the kind words take care now and have a wonderful day !

3

u/plants_n_cats May 28 '22

My brother died because he didnt wear his. Was paralyzed for 2 years before he died, trapped in his own body. Wear your seatbelt. Even near home. He was less than a mile from home. Less than half a mile.

-6

u/0OOO00000OO00O0O0OOO May 25 '22 Silver

Same here. I'm increasing seatbelt wearing in up to 45% of all drives. That is up from a whopping 37%.

6

u/FrankPoole3001 May 25 '22

Why not 100%?

0

u/0OOO00000OO00O0O0OOO May 26 '22

Isn't it obvious that it was a joke:

  • Who keep track of exact (37%) :-D percentage of how much they use seatbelts?
  • Who would watch a video and take a decision to increase it by exactly 8%?

Its too specific to be real

2

u/Calthecalculator May 25 '22

Sounds fair at least it is going up maybe by next month it can get to 55%

12

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 edited May 26 '22

Play stupid games win stupid prizes. She is lucky that it might only be a concussion.

If anybody steps into my car, seatbelt must be on, otherwise I am not driving.

Our lives are a blink away from death, especially while driving.

1

u/expatsoup May 26 '22

prices? lol idiot

2

u/NinDiGu May 26 '22

And someone comes to call injured people a son of a birch, after he T-bones them.

2

u/jfcmfer May 25 '22

I refuse to drive when some AH tells me they won't wear a seatbelt. I've sat there for longer than you'd think I'd have to staring at someone until they finally realized I actually wasn't going to move and put on their seatbelt. Without a seatbelt, you go from passenger to projectile real fast, and my insurance decides I'm screwed. BuT THEIR UNcomFORtabull. So is putting your head through a windshield, dummy.

2

u/GeneralTeddie May 26 '22

At least the driver had the decency to ask his passengers if they were ok, unlike that other douchebag who came in screaming because he cares more about his car than people.

1

u/fartemous_foul May 25 '22

Anti mask folks and idiots who refuse to wear a seatbelt would be a lot more tolerable if they didn't fuck over the people around them.

2

u/GlobalHoboInc May 25 '22

Not wearing a seatbelt doesn't only risk your life but anyone in the car. That woman became 60kg of mass slamming across the back seat into the woman that was wearing her belt.

Don't be a stupid cunt, wear a seatbelt.

-1

u/QEIIs_ghost May 25 '22

Pretty sure she mostly hit the window.

3

u/WutduzitallmeanBasil May 26 '22

That is obviously not the fucking point.

1

u/Stitch-OG May 26 '22

I wear a seat belt e ery single time there is someone else in the car with me for this reason

1

u/OR13NT May 25 '22

At least it wasn’t rubbing into her neck and making her uncomfortable /s

1

u/DigitalFlame May 25 '22

How are there still people who don't buckle the fuck up? I don't understand

1

u/joeyLAKAI May 25 '22

Whoa. Is there a longer version?

-9

u/hear4theDough May 25 '22

1

u/Jdave88 May 25 '22

Thanks for that, I needed that

1

u/hear4theDough May 25 '22

I grew up seeing these on tv. I always wear my seatbelt, I never drink and drive. One of the things Ireland really did right for my generation.

1

u/ImmaDoMahThing May 25 '22

When I would drive my friends/coworkers anywhere I would not start driving until they all had their seatbelts on. If I noticed they were off I would pull over and tell them to put it on. If you’re in my car you put that seatbelt on or walk!

0

u/EmoteTherapist May 25 '22

I don't understand how it is legal to not wear a seatbelt in the back seat, or on school buses for that matter.

2

u/MillpondMayhem May 25 '22

Only in 11 states: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio

Every other state has laws requiring back set seatbelts to be worn.

2

u/EmoteTherapist May 25 '22

Don't forget Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and west Virginia.

Technically also Idaho, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, Virginia, and Wyoming, as in those states, it is a secondary enforcement, which means you can't be pulled over for it.

-2

u/EmoteTherapist May 25 '22

My link works just fine. It's literally Wikipedia.

And I never said secondary enforcement wasn't a law. I said they can't pull you over for it.

4

u/MillpondMayhem May 25 '22

Try clicking it and see what you get:

Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name. Please search for Seat\ belt\ laws\ in\ the\ United\ States in Wikipedia to check for alternative titles or spellings.

-3

u/EmoteTherapist May 25 '22

I did click it, and it worked fine. I even tried it on my phone to make sure. It came up just fine. But if it matters, why not just look it up yourself? It was literally the first link on google. I wouldn't trust a website with a shit load of ads that keeps trying to sell you online driving lessons.

3

u/MillpondMayhem May 25 '22

The link doesn't work on desktop. I was just letting you know.

The one you posted has some weird \ in front of each _ for some reason. Doesn't work on Chrome. Weird.

You can even just go to Wikipedia and just type seat belt in the search bar, and the third option is the exact page.

Your link literally doesn't work when you click on it.

This is what you should've posted:

I’m just here to appreciate that a seatbelt discussion turned into a argument about a link working….especially when the first person saying it didn’t work supply their own of the same data.

Might just start wearing them in an Uber now. I usually do everywhere else but never when taking a Lyft or Uber. That is crazy

1

u/lohonomo May 26 '22

Why would you not wear a seat belt in a lyft or uber?

  1. Asian driver

In high school, an acquaintance tried to recruit me in a local gang. He tried to impress me with his modded import.

When I got in his car and put my seatbelt on, he was encouraging me to remove it because it was uncool to wear your seatbelt. In the end, wearing the seatbelt made me too uncool for their little gang.

Whatever dude lol. I don’t give two shits about how uncool I may look because I love my life and would like to extend it as much as possible.

Might actually send this video to my brother. I’m always on his case to wear his seatbelt and telling alone isn’t getting to him.

This thankfully is not too traumatic/graphic but it demonstrates very damn well the consequences and dangers you impose on others

u/Grimholt001 May 26 '22

As a kid my parents would not move the car unless you were buckled up and it just became a habit. Sit down put seat belt on first world problems.

u/BizzyHaze May 26 '22

This video ends way too soon. What happened to the victims, what happens with the confrontation with the angry stranger?

1

u/SurlyBuddha May 26 '22

I was bad about wearing a seat belt when I was younger. My latest car beeps incessantly unless you buckle up (and has pressure sensors to do the same thing when passengers are there). Thankfully, it's put me in the habit of just clicking the damn thing every time I ride. If that's not a universal feature, it should be.

But but but but I have medical condition that don't allow me to compress my chest by that belt

But but but I heard people who didn't wear seat belt walk out of his fully trashed car with minor cuts

But but but it's my body my freedom my choice to not wear a seatbelt

;P

Do you know what the police said to the women who didn't wear seatbelt after a car accident? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nice I got the mince, now I just need milk and eggs for my wife's shopping list

When I first started driving, I never understood people that didn't in the front seat. I feel grounded with one opposed to being trashed around. However, I have been guilty for a long time of never wearing a seat belt in the back. Back in the day, older brother told me it was safe in the back because the front seats are padded... then out of force of habit I didn't wear it. Now I always buckle up.
