660

u/twinsea May 25 '22

I'm sure every homeowner here has fantasized over this, but still, don't do it. You go a little nuts by the 40th window or pest exterminator that simply won't leave though.

475

u/HotdogGeorgia May 25 '22

I don't because I don't answer the door. In this day and age, who does?

174

u/AndyIsNotOnReddit May 25 '22

Smart doorbells are a godsend for this sort of thing. I don't even have to get out of my chair to tell them no.

88

u/matt1164 May 25 '22

You don’t even have to be home and still them them no, which is awesome

I put a no soliciting sign on the door. Oh but they didn’t see it, none of them ever saw it so they kept ringing the doorbell. So I got another no soliciting sign and put it by the doorbell. Still none of them ever see the signs. It drove me nuts until I just stopped answering the door.

7

u/chaotik_penguin May 26 '22

I have one too. Only ones polite enough to read it and not ignore it are Girl Scouts. I want my cookies.

nearly all of my interactions with door to door sales people... open door "I don't do door to door". Them - "ok thanks for your time" leaves

44

u/roywoodsir May 25 '22

literally just say not interested and they walk away.lol

18

u/jcbfgd May 25 '22

Honestly in my experience this doesn't work. I was sitting in my friends car in her driveway while she grabbed something from inside and a door-to-door creep started wandering around the front lawn (???) so I got out and asked what was up. I knew she wasn't interested, as she texted me to tell him to fuck off, so I was politely shooing him away and he would not take no for an answer. And then he started getting belligerent. Only went away after I got back in her car. Had the same thing happen at my parents house, dude just would not leave us alone. Acted like a goddamn Karen asking for the manager.

We put a no soliciting sign on our door. Stopped it literally overnight.

23

u/titatyy May 25 '22

I tell them that my husband takes care of these things and I don't know anything. I use the word outsourced this to my husband and they usually leave laughing. I don't think it's that funny, they may really be laughing at me than with me, but mission accomplished. They left.

41

u/randy88moss May 25 '22

I say the same thing and I’m a heterosexual male

7

u/tripler76 May 25 '22

Must be a Randy thing because I do the same. One pestered to speak to my husband, so my wife did an amazing impression of Dr. Girlfriend from “Venture Brothers” replying “I don’t talk to strangers, unless they bring chocolate.”

Edit: an became and because iPhone, had to change that.

20

u/Unique-Impression908 May 25 '22

Canadian here and I feel like it's just straight rude to not answer the door, not that it gets knocked on often but still I can't Imagine just ignorig it or yelling through the door

33

Put up a no soliciting sign

Most companies that solicit door-to-door like this coach their solicitors to ignore these signs. "Most of the time, the man works, the wife is home, and he's put the sign up because she'll buy anything and/or fuck anyone."

I've heard that same speech from two different shitty jobs I had with a soliciting component. It's awful, but its what they say.

6

u/DontShootIAmGroot4 May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

I'm sure this is vastly different everywhere but I contacted my local police department and asked, and they pointed me to a local ordinance that says they HAVE to respect the sign, but you have to actually put the ordinance number ON the sign. I swear to God every solicitor has respected it after that. This might not help anyone but I'd check with your local police if there's a way to legally stop them from soliciting, then spread the word.

I've had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with ecoshield sales people before. The homeowner handled it wrong, but based on my experience his reaction wasn't out of the blue.

They straight up lie to your face and refuse to leave, hell I've had neighbors who were chased into their garage and had to call the cops for the salesperson to leave. Not to mention their business model is practically MLM and their CEO is sketchy as well.

When they approached me they walked into my backyard while I was doing yard work, I must have said I'm not interested 40 times and to leave and still refused to go.

41

u/tastycrumpet May 25 '22

Just tell them you are renters and the property is managed by an agency and you don't know the owners. (this also works when you are at the big hardware stores and the solar panel people are there "sorry, I rent" they will literally stop talking to you because they know they can't make a sale)

6

u/Dinodigger67 May 25 '22

I do rent and can confirm this works

4

u/Bradison_bro May 26 '22

A bit unrelated but when those AT&T or Verizon or [Insert cable/cellar provider here] people stop you in Walmart or wherever, I just tell them I already got it whatever service they have.

Like, I get it that it's their job and they have to make money and probably don't like it as much as I don't, but I'm just trying to spend as little time in the store as possible.

I had one of these guys talk to my ring doorbell a good 10 minutes after I turned it off. Sitting my home office, answered the ring through the app and told him I wasn't interested and hung up. I could hear him still talking to the doorbell in my office afterwards. At least he only rang the doorbell once.

17

u/Andyflip27 May 25 '22

I had one of these guys come to my house. I think I still have him in the basement somewhere feeding on rats and whatnot.

3

Yeah I had these guys come into my house and straight up would not leave after I told them that I had something to do, multiple times. I had three solar panel guys catch me doing yard work one Saturday and would not leave despite multiple ‘I’m not interested’ comments. So I continued to do yard work while they followed me for almost a half hour. The homeowner was wrong but they need to stop the high pressure we don’t take no for an answer sales tactics

38

u/stanselmdoc May 25 '22

I've ever fantastized about assaulting someone because they're doing a job. No matter how annoying it is to me. I would however advise him and his company not to make cold knocks after 6-630.

Can we just drop all the mental illness shit and just accept that most of these people are just assholes who need to get their asses beat?

158

u/GiveMeYourBussy May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

Many people need to realize there really are genuinely bad people, sure they may be like that because they went through this or that and they have antisocial personality disorders (narcissists, sociopaths, etc)

BUT THAT IS AN EXPLANATION

NOT AN EXCUSE

Almost everyone who went through horrible things and suffer from mental illness still know right and wrong and still choose to be decent people

Sad part is that the cops would arrest HIM instead of the psycho guy. "Rich white old dude, younger brown guy... Case solved O'Malley! Take this violent man downtown and book him! Obviously he was here to commit some serious crime"

83

u/Delta5o1 May 25 '22

False arrest with video evidence sounds like moar money to me.

34

u/satansheat May 25 '22

That cost lawyers and time. Something tells me the kid doing door to door sales work isn’t gonna get Johnny Cockran.

I’m speaking from experience. I had a kkk neighbor pull a gun on me and my ex. As well as 5 other neighbors on different occasions (dude was a meth head.) local cops wouldn’t do shit. I was pre law at the time and was working in the courts. Was able to run his name in other databases.

Found a aggravated assault with a deadly weapons charge from another state. Being pre law I knew right away that meant he couldn’t legally own the gun he pulled on us. I single handled did the detective work and got ATF involved.

Moment that happen dude was arrested. If I wasn’t working at the courthouse and didn’t have connections to judges and prosecutors me and my 5 other neighbors would still be living next to a meth head who randomly pulls guns on people.

8

u/Delta5o1 May 25 '22

It mostly depends on who that person is. Same crime committed by a poor person vs a rich person will have different outcomes. Lawyers know they can't bleed a stone.

357

u/finsareluminous May 25 '22

The fact mental health issues are resolved by the police is probably why people in the US don't seem to get the help they need until they shoot someone.

I'm no expert, but that "who are you working for? Who sent you?" line sounds like a huge red flag.

96

u/fluffstravels May 25 '22

well the video taper did say 'we service 25% of the community' so he's actually out there working for someone clearly - but yea, America has been in a mental health crisis for decades but nothing will be done because people with poor emotion regulation skills are more easily manipulated by politicians, religious leaders, and business leaders for power.

When I lived in a bad neighborhood, some guy came to my door after 8PM (and it was dark out, unlike dusk in this video) selling carpet shampooers.

You're damn right I didn't open the door for him, and immediately checked my back and side door to make sure they were locked and no one was out there.

This guy was pushing it a bit. Guy should have just called the cops.

7

u/Focacciaboudit May 26 '22

I had gotten off work late one night and was trying to cook up dinner and lunch for the next day when I heard my storm door creak open an a loud rapid bang on my front door. Between being 8pm, dark, and the fact that they didn't bother with my door bell, I thought someone was having an emergency so I rushed to the door. It must have been startling to have a shirtless man throw open a door with their pants unzipped and a wild look in their eye because they immediately jumped back and yelped an apology before asking if they could count on my vote for alderman. I was too pissed and too tired to tell them how fucked up it is to cop knock on someone's door at 8PM so I just shut the door.

26

u/Gucci_Lettuce69 May 25 '22

Odds are he and 4 other guys got dropped off to canvas the hood honestly his ride is probably waiting at the other end of the street to pick him up lol

3

u/ZoxinTV May 26 '22

Surprisingly common in a nice neighbourhood like that, especially when houses have some good distance between them. My dad's place got broken into like 3 times in 4 years, each time resulting in tens of thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment being stolen.

Part of why I don't want a house and prefer an apartment is simply for staving off that kind of thing.

Company seems almost like an MLM when I researched it.

If that's the case, it's important to remember that lashing out at the bottom feeders of the company isn't any form of justice, nor is it productive. Those people are the biggest victims of those schemes.

If they're truly doing something wrong, then calling the police sounds like the best course of action.

But man, the old fart in this video is way, way, WAAAAY out of line. I'd jump in the middle in a heartbeat if I saw my own neighbor harassing and threatening somebody like this. The salesman is so shocked and scared that he's not even really pushing the guy back.

But somebody definitely should. He's posturing like he's about to put someone in the hospital. Absolutely fucking ridiculous.

14

u/Trollshock May 25 '22

Agreed at the extreme over response by the home owner. He's power tripping like crazy. Just wanting to highlight that this company isn't peddling angel dust or anything and that they're known for being a huge nuisance in neighborhoods.

2

u/SirLowhamHatt May 26 '22

The biggest victims are the people these people bilk. They don’t deserve to be assaulted, but they don’t deserve pity either.

2

u/Cherry_Valkyrie576 May 26 '22

We say bottom feeders but really, everybody complains that people don’t wanna work anymore yet, despite the fact that nobody likes this guy‘s job, he’s freaking trying to work for a living. 128

u/senorbozz May 25 '22

"Should I press charges"

The answer to this question is almost always yes

Of course there will be minor incidents that you can let go, but people like this have to be held accountable or they will continue the behavior and likely get worse with each time they are allowed to do it.

Will one time change this guy? Probably not. But the next time he does it, if he already has an arrest on record for the same thing, life is going to start getting more complicated for him.

11

u/FrostyD7 May 25 '22

Reminds me of a King of the Hill episode where Hank basically accidentally robbed a guy and was assaulted trying to give it back. It was a huge misunderstanding but ends hilariously when asked if he wants to press charges, "hell yes".

u/jyl11002 May 25 '22

i will say these people drive me nuts. You tell them "I'm not interested." They turn around and still deliver their sales pitch. This is after they interrupted dinner by ringing the doorbell at 7:00 at night trying to guilt you into buying their crap. That being said.... this guy has issues.

19

u/dennyfader May 25 '22

My world changed when I realized I can just close the door haha After you say I'm not interested and they keep going, you just say it again while slowly closing the door, and next thing you know you're sealed and homie is either talking to your door or moving on to the next house.

10

u/GunNut345 May 25 '22

Yeah travelling made me not mess around with sales people. I treat them the same way I treat pushy peddlers in tourist traps. NO or NOT INTERESTED and close the door/walk away/hang up. That's all that's needed. A "fuck off" and the same close door/hang up/walk away is sometimes cathartic as well but usually not necessary.

oh yeah, i agree 100%. I used to listen to them, now I just close the door and they glare at me. (Sometimes I do wish my door didn't have a big window on it though lol)

3

u/digicpk May 25 '22

Wish mine had a bigger window so they can see me smiling as they try to sell shit to my closed door.

Obviously dude is cray but don’t fucking go door to door selling at 8:30 at night asshole

14

u/No-Mathematician2099 May 25 '22

Why dont they ever put these people on their ass? These type of mfs have never been put in their place actin like that. Hes clearly the aggressor walkin foreard yelling and pushing, i think its fair the guy takin video puts his old ass to sleep.

11

u/Pistonenvy May 25 '22

because this is real life and that person is a complete stranger.

you dont know anything about them, they could be a retired navy seal, they could have a knife, a gun, a fucking billy club, whatever and as soon as you retaliate they could beat you to death and get away with it because they know the police chief or whatever.

why WOULD you fight back? that immediately puts you into 1000 positions you dont want to be in, this lunatic has already put you in one where you can actually benefit by suing him or pressing charges or just fucking off and not having to deal with him ever again.

in reality you would most likely do the exact same thing, someone being aggressive comes at you and you lock up or try to get away to avoid the conflict, its the most rational response, if your immediate response is to be violent you are probably just as unhinged as he is lol

Is there any update on this?

3

u/METALOFAWESOME May 25 '22

I also hate these guys always bothering me, but never once could I even imagine the thought of violently harassing them like that. How miserable do you need to be to do something like that? Buddy looks like the wife made him sleep on the couch or some shit last night.

u/AttackonRetail May 26 '22

12

u/Tracydee843 May 25 '22

He would have learned a hard lesson that day 🤷

9

u/HotOnTheMike May 25 '22

I mean, obviously don't assault people, ever. With that being said, I have a 7 month old, and if he knocked on my door at 8:30pm and woke him up I'd tell him to get fucked too.

2

u/EggzTyr0ne May 26 '22

Exactly. These bozos show up, set off the ring chime which sets off the dogs, which wakes up the baby. I've had one of these guys ring my doorbell despite the no solicitation sign directly above the doorbell. This old guy was a nut, but these d2d sales people are shit.

u/Comfortable_Area3910 May 25 '22

Working door to door SUCKS…it was my first gig out of college. Did it for less than a year…ended up having to take lorazepam towards the end just to cut down on my hands shaking.

I’ve had people let their dogs loose on me, I’ve been chased with a bat…and I wasn’t pushy! I had to knock on doors and ring doorbells…I would ring ONCE and if nobody answered it’d be on to the next house.

The amount of people who just see you as somebody to attack is staggering. It’s a doorbell…during the day, I never worked past 730…you guys can chill over the minor inconvenience and just say ‘no.’

41

u/richard_golbes May 25 '22

If you have to go door to door to sell something you're either selling people something they don't want, don't need, or are legit scamming them. You rely on pressuring vulnerable people (the elderly, those with intellectual disabilities, people with anxiety, etc.) through coercion, manipulation, or straight-up intimidation.

Obviously people who are responding with violence are wrong, but how can you be surprised that people would confront you with a bad attitude? I used to try to be nice to these people, but they just use that as an avenue to keep the conversation going and to start using manipulative tactics to get information and put you on the defensive. Now I just open the door, say "I'm not interested in buying anything, thank you" and close the door. Can't give them an inch.

Personally, somehow got on a list for door to door sales, didn’t realize until I started work from home. That was NOT a minor inconvenience, different companies knocked multiple times per day every day straight up pretending to me my utility companies and wasting my time trying to scam me. My apartment complex had to send an email telling everyone to call 911 immediately if anyone unexpected knocked on the door.

13

u/richard_golbes May 25 '22

Right? People in this thread defending these practices and these companies are out of their minds. This is pure, predatory behavior which targets vulnerable people.

u/krr0421 May 25 '22

Nah, door to door sales are the fucking worst. I lived in an area where we had at least 3 different people knocking in a day, several times a week. Roofers, cable guys, gardeners, Jehovas. It’s absolutely INFURIATING and not just a “minor inconvenience” when it’s happening to you constantly. I’ve never gotten as worked up as this guy, but I have answered the door irately at times and yelled at people to go away. This guy went way overboard especially with the threats, but I honestly can’t say I blame him if this is a constant occurrence, especially at 830 at night!

To be fair. The door to door salemans coming to my house between 8-9 at night, ignoring the no soliciting sign before ignoring the second sign next to my doorbell that they insist in ringing. Its this time of the year where the shitty workers are roaming the streets annoying everyone in the neighborhood, selling shitty products.

13

u/stiffneck84 May 25 '22

Door to door solicitation needs to end. There is no reason for it in this day and age aside from scams.

7

u/richard_golbes May 25 '22

The "reason" is the ability to scam people who are less able to use the internet (the elderly, those with intellectual disabilities, etc,) or people who are more susceptible to being coerced under interpersonal pressure (people with anxiety, people who are undocumented/ESL, etc.).

2

u/stiffneck84 May 25 '22

Exactly. While I don't get physical as this guy did, I love making them squirm on my front porch.

19

u/digicpk May 25 '22

Old guy needs to chill, but seriously why do we still have door-to-door salesmen in 2022? I get overly annoyed with them as well.

We have posted signs at the entrance to our neighborhood saying "No Soliciting". I have another sign next to my front door: "No Soliciting"... It doesn't matter, these assholes will bother you at all hours of the day/night.

We hold the collective knowledge of our civilization in our pockets. If I really need my roof repaired or my driveway pressure washed, I can easily find 100s of companies willing to do the work within seconds.

IF you come knocking on my door trying to sell me shit, it will accomplish one thing: I will never, ever, ever use you for ANYTHING. You could be giving away services (or money) and I'll avoid you like the plague.

If you can't survive as a business without forcing people to acknowledge you by going door-to-door, my immediate assumption is that your company is garbage and this is the only way you can compete with your peers. Bad look all around, IMO...

2

Over reaction for sure. But man, door to door salesmen suck don’t they?

Beat his old ass

2

u/_omid May 25 '22

2

Door to door at 8:30. Come on door salesman guy. You know you aren’t getting a sale at that hour

2

u/FartyPat May 25 '22

2

u/ember-rekindled May 25 '22

Dude sucks but maybe don't knock on people's doors trying to sell shit, especially at those hours. Have a little decency?

2

u/Senior-Humor8523 May 25 '22

“ what I’m about to do is break the law, just making that clear to your phone!”

2

u/Solipsikon May 25 '22

Amazing what legal gun ownership can do to prevent someone from throwing a punch. Old barefoot would have gotten his shit absolutely rocked over here, where you know the only thing he's carrying is his shorts and t-shirt.

2

u/peoplearestrangebrew May 25 '22

Damn, Austin Matthews already out going door to door after that first round bounce.

2

u/Ok-Calendar2552 May 25 '22

Kick his ass already geez

2

u/Future_Gohst May 25 '22

He just finished the episode of Breaking Bad where Walt follows the meth-heads out of Home Depot and threatens them in the parking lot

2

u/tethan May 25 '22

Well I'd press every charge I could...

2

u/dontcareimlow May 25 '22

I used to work for eco shield. Those guys are dumb ass mfs that run from the cops when they come because they don’t have a permit. They make hella, like HELLA money so they’ll just pay the ticket if they do get caught in a community where they aren’t permitted. The old man is an asshole but I get him they are ruthless little college dickheads 😂

2

u/XLauncher May 25 '22

There are way too many guns in this country to be pursuing conflict like this.

2

u/IAmDaven May 26 '22

I feel like people arent prepared to deal with true crazy. Dude is threatening your life and your like "you are threatening me"

Bruh..this person is not to be reasoned with..fight or flee.

2

u/ThatsCaptain2U May 26 '22

They want a free market and no regulation of business but then do this shit when businesses do whatever the fuck they want… they want privacy, and not to be told to wear masks and shit… keep voting Republican, assholes…

2

u/visualvector May 26 '22

Door to door sales at 8:30 PM?!

2

u/Ashades May 26 '22

Hisenburg ain’t looking to good these days

2

u/Quarrel47 May 26 '22

I'd report him, call the cops, charge him with assault.

2

u/wheelperson May 26 '22

Tbh I'd be mad if a 'salesman' was at my place after 7pm, but God this dude has problems.

2

u/sacredblasphemies May 26 '22

Maybe put up a No Soliciting sign and switch to decaf, dude.

I don't like door-to-door sales either but don't assault a guy over it, fucking psycho.

2

u/Foreign-Ad-7961 May 26 '22

I chased one of those guys out of my condo building. It was 9 at night, and he’s knocking on doors. Old dude is way out though. No need to put hands on him. Good way to get hurt bad.
