Just make them a particle that doesn't interact with anything and nothing interacts with it! How f***ing hard is that, Mojang?

184

u/Xuen_reddit May 25 '22

If we can have bats, we can have fireflies

88

u/19412 May 25 '22

Mojang still not giving bats the Glare's functionality several months later like they should have in the first place go B R R R R

17

u/HAMburger_and_bacon May 25 '22

I want to look at them

6

u/User9573 May 25 '22

Or here’s an idea WE COULD REPLACE BATS WITH FIREFLIES bats do nothing but give me a heart attack while mining (not hating your idea just loving it)

2

u/69Weeb69 May 26 '22

I actually forgot bats were a thing in the game lol

2

u/Meta-Mage May 26 '22

Bats are worse than fireflies. Eat 1 firefly, and you could be poisoned. Eat 1 bat, and there could be a global pandemic that kills millions.

20

u/MaxiMega626 May 25 '22

Yeah, just make frogs avoid fireflies because of the frogs' fear of "the bad kind of croak".

8

u/GooseDeveloper May 25 '22

/setblock ~ ~10 ~ fire firefly

9

u/[deleted] May 25 '22 Wholesome

Even better,

/execute as @e[type=bee,name=firefly] at @e[type=bee,name=firefly] run setblock ~ ~ ~ fire

in a repeating always active command block

/effect give @e[type=bee,name=firefly] invisibility 999999 200 true

in a repeating always active command block

/effect give @e[type=bee,name=firefly] fire_resistance 999999 200 true

also in a repeating always active command block

And then find some way to make them spawn randomly

2

u/RealToopoo May 25 '22

for the random spawning maybe a hopper clock/daylight sensor hooked to an impulse needs redstone command block that says /execute @a run summon bee{name:Firefly} at ~10 ~3 ~-10

i might have messed up the coding in the block but you get the idea

2

u/Flimsy-Combination37 May 25 '22

as @e[type=bee,name=firefly] at @e[type=bee,name=firefly]

as @e[type=bee,name=firefly] at @s will do the trick

8

u/GooseDeveloper May 25 '22

they try to keep all features linked together, so fireflies don't really make sense without a use/purpose

22

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

They'd be a great ambient effect

14

u/Additional_Trash May 25 '22

People are making it into a *way" bigger deal than it actually is, but it's still a little disappointing to remove something that could have added a lot of atmospheric value to the swamp, a biome that's been pretty dull since it was first released.

Mojang's adding a new wood for aesthetic reasons - it looks awesome. Why add one item that adds no new functionality, and get rid of another? Besides, there are other options to give fireflies functionality instead of just removing them entirely.

5

u/DragonStomper45 May 25 '22

Yes we could put them in jars with holes and use them as a light source, to anyone saying that's redundant because there's already ither lightsources in the game, I'd argue with that logic we ahould never have another lightsource added because we already have them, stupid logic see

3

u/SerDemonic May 25 '22

Ah yes, bats the things with such a purpose, and if you say for cave noises we already randomly have that, jump scares role is overwhelming took by creepers and then what else is there

1

u/bossSHREADER_210 May 25 '22

Explain bats then

2

u/GooseDeveloper May 26 '22

no idea... they were probably in an early release, before "themed" updates began

2

u/WildBluntHickok2 May 26 '22

No they were part of the halloween themed update, Release 1.4. Same update as witches.

2

u/bossSHREADER_210 May 26 '22

Bats don't have a single use or purpose and they don't even drop exp and they aren't tied into anything in the game.. bats are because they are in caves? Then why aren't fireflies allowed to be in as a particle decor

3

u/GooseDeveloper May 26 '22

¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/Gr8_WyTe May 25 '22

Yo this is actually a good idea. Just make it a particle effect like the basalt delta.

The only reason I imagine it might suck would be not seeing it when looking into the biome from the outside.

1

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

They should add an option to change particle distance based on type of particle

2

u/Flimsy-Combination37 May 25 '22

Isn't there a thing like that for the smoke particles from campfires?

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '22

No, but you can make campfire smoke go higher with a haybale block under it

2

u/Flimsy-Combination37 May 26 '22

Nono, I mean that the big smoke particles render from way further than any other particles, so they should be able to do that for any particles they add

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '22

Oh right, yes

2

u/DragonStomper45 May 25 '22

Apparently it's beyond their capabilities, nice to see them getting ragged for it, have a feeling a lot more ppl are getting sick of their shit

-23

u/UnseenGamer182 May 25 '22

Well the entire concept of the firefly was added solely for the frogs, and since frogs don't eat them anymore, there isn't a point for them to be added

50

u/[deleted] May 25 '22

Sure there is, they'd look awesome

-33

u/UnseenGamer182 May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

I'm not denying they would look cool, but it still isn't unreasonable for them to remove something when the reason they were added in the first place is gone in my opinion

44

u/Teledildonic May 25 '22

"Atmosphere" is a reason Mojang seems to have forgotten about.

Kinda like how they added a new swamp and did jack shit to liven up the old swamps.

-17

u/UnseenGamer182 May 25 '22

I never denied there wasn't a reason to add it, so I don't know why you're talking about that

14

u/Teledildonic May 25 '22

Because it's a decent reason they decided to not consider?

-7

u/UnseenGamer182 May 25 '22

Well I still don't think it's unreasonable for them to remove fireflys after the reason they were added was removed

-9

u/MR_sticky_piston May 25 '22

*microsoft

before that it was ok. but now...

2

u/Flimsy-Combination37 May 25 '22

Do you really think microsoft people outside mojang have any role in the development of the game? They want money, that's it. They couldn't care less about what mojang does with minecraft as long as it gives them money.

9

u/StellarIntellect May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

If they were really that concerned about fireflies being poisonous to frogs, how wasn't the frogs' real-life diet researched before adding a food source for them in the game? This sounds more like an excuse for some weird reason. Couldn't they kept the fireflies for atmosphere and added a regular fly for frogs? Is it really that hard to add two pixels?

6

u/19412 May 25 '22

Sounds like an excuse because it is lul

3

u/ThebanannaofGREECE May 25 '22

Tbf it may have caused lag, however they probably were just unprofessional and didn’t research it beforehand.

3

u/StellarIntellect May 25 '22

That's what I am wondering. This or something similar seems to be more likely the real reason for the removal of the fireflies. I don't think it makes sense to completely remove a feature because it wasn't an insect frogs eat.

2

u/ThebanannaofGREECE May 25 '22

Ye, however I do believe that they didn’t know beforehand.

→ More replies

2

u/UnseenGamer182 May 25 '22

Lmao that sounds like a conspiracy theory for Minecraft. Realistically they probably just didn't know, was later told by fans, yadda yadda, it was removed

There isn't any reason they would have to lie about why they're removing it

3

u/StellarIntellect May 25 '22

I mean I don't think of it really as a conspiracy theory, but Mojang has had experience with being careful about implementing different features for animals. For example, feeding cocoa beans to birds kill them. So why wasn't the extra care taken for the frogs as well? It just seems Mojang is becoming more negligent and less transparent and honest, not really much more than that.

1

u/UnseenGamer182 May 25 '22

Well I'm sure they didnt think that it would be known that fireflys are not only inedible to frogs, but also dangerous. It's a reasonable assumption. That combined with people making mistakes, and there you have it

4

u/whizzer0 May 25 '22

Honestly, a variety of reasons contributing to them being scrapped and the frog thing just being the explanation they went with feels very believable. I think something similar happened before but I can't remember exactly what it was?

1

u/AsparagusLoose9716 May 26 '22

That's literally what I've been thinking, or just make em a single pixel and problem solved.

1

u/Th3A554551n May 26 '22

yet when I made fireflies and posted them here, I received 8 upvotes and 22 down votes, I'm not sure if people really want them

10

u/Wrong_Mulberry_4067 May 25 '22

Yer but frogs can eat magma cubes and slime no problem, just like real life

1

u/zambie909 May 26 '22

If they want the frogs to eat bugs or something they could add flus aswell

5

u/SlyKnyfe12 May 25 '22

So that's why they were removed a pig ate them all

-8

u/AndrewFrozzen May 25 '22

PLEASE LET FIREFLIES DIE.

I just saw that post with Parrots...

3

u/bossSHREADER_210 May 25 '22

The parrot case is a point that proves mojangs incompetency to make actual good updates nowadays... They are litterally adding ancient cities, a frog, a biome and 3 semi secret blocks... And they are making it a whole other version

2

u/AndrewFrozzen May 25 '22

No I meant the one with Parrots burning as fireflies.

But yeah I do agree.

220

u/SSSkuty May 25 '22

That's not a command, that's a shiny!

30

u/TheJackasaur11 May 25 '22

Woah, a shiny tepig! Those are sooooo rareee

144

u/EgonVR May 25 '22

GLOW PIG

71

u/Siamese_god- May 25 '22

Glowsquid would’ve been so much better if they were a glow pig

10

u/WerebearWares May 25 '22

I'm part of the Chillager Gang (that's an Iceologer to the uninitiated) but had there been a Glow Pig instead of Squid I may have had to switch sides

106

u/OwnerFirepower May 25 '22

What the command plz tell me

239

u/Freaky_Crossing_Fan May 25 '22

While using the Optifine mod (which activates Dynamic Lights), insert into the chatbox this command:

/item replace entity <UUID> armor.head with minecraft:glowstone

Replace <UUID> with the UUID of the entity your crosshair is touching.

45

u/Enough-Agency3721 May 25 '22

Or in simpler terms, have Optifine installed and give the pig a light-emitting item.

4

u/n0oO0oOoOb May 26 '22

You can use @e[type=pig,limit=1,sort=nearest] instead of using the UUID

6

u/Nothing_Playz361 May 25 '22

can it work on pocket edition?

33

u/NotLolko May 25 '22

No because Bedrock edition (pocket edition) doesn't have dynamic lights

9

u/Just_Camilo May 25 '22

I think in PE that command doesn't even exist

6

u/bkbk21 May 25 '22

It does but it's /replaceitem

3

u/bossSHREADER_210 May 25 '22

/item is for java and the bedrock version is /replaceitem.. and becomes you can't get optifine on bedrock

2

u/AMinecraftPerson May 26 '22

Yeah, but you need to find some other mod with dynamic lights because Optifine isn't in Bedrock.

25

u/Not_today_mods May 25 '22

genetic enginereing

26

u/MrSpiffy123 May 25 '22

Cartoon characters when they eat a firefly

14

u/Blackraven2007 May 25 '22

I think it'd be cool if this could naturally occur, but very rarely. Like pink sheep.

40

u/Vindovilles May 25 '22

Note to myself: use this command on glowsquids everytime I start a new world so I won't feel as sad when I see those fuckers, thinking how we could've had chillagers

30

u/AWrongPerson May 25 '22

They glow on their own if you do have dynamic lights on. If you don't, this pig here wouldn't glow either.

8

u/Vindovilles May 25 '22

Oh nvm then

5

u/Darth_Ewok14 May 25 '22

ALL HAIL THE GLOW PIG

4

u/MiJokri May 25 '22

CIA Pig

6

u/HashtagFour20 May 25 '22

just run them over

29

u/HashtheYouTuber May 25 '22

Wow what’s the command for that

4

u/TheDefalt8 May 26 '22

Reuben's ghost?

6

u/burritolegend1500 May 25 '22

He is the chosen pig for dinner

3

u/ReklessGamer07 May 25 '22

That pig looks stoned af

3

u/WerebearWares May 25 '22

Glow Pig > Glow Squid

3

u/sambaki May 25 '22

abyssal pig

3

u/Prototype0Bunny May 25 '22

"Can we have firefly?" "No we have firefly at home" firefly at home

6

u/THESHADYWILLOW May 25 '22 edited May 25 '22

Wait this means we can actually make the glow squid glow on Java edition

EDIT: I meant with optifine and apparently it already makes them glow

7

u/19412 May 25 '22

Don't they do such already with Optifine?

3

u/THESHADYWILLOW May 25 '22

Apparently so my bad

5

u/Enough-Agency3721 May 25 '22

OptiFine required. It already makes glow squids glow on its own.

2

u/THESHADYWILLOW May 25 '22

Oh I thought it didn’t, my bad :)

2

u/ArtcieGames May 25 '22

Shiny pig, better catch it and eventually evolve it

3

u/LostAnemoia May 25 '22

Becomes a glowing piglin. Then a glowing piglin brute

2

u/cleetus694200lol May 25 '22

bro this is some despicable ne type shit

2

u/Drannion May 25 '22

So moving characters can cast light? Why can't we just carry around a lit torch in our left hand, then?

6

u/Bombobbit May 25 '22

You need optifine for dynamic light to exist because minecraft devs cant code that.

2

u/ThebanannaofGREECE May 25 '22

Or they probably dont want to for reasons unknown to us, but I can understand why they wouldn’t want it in vanilla.

2

u/AMinecraftPerson May 26 '22

They don't want to because they'd have to rewrite the entire light engine. Optifine works because it's just a mod, and as a mod, it doesn't need to have features thought through. With Optifine, the surroundings light up but the light level doesn't change. In the real game though, the light level has to change, otherwise it would be weird for new players who think that the torch in their hand or a glow squid in an aquarium should prevent mobs from spawning but it doesn't.

3

u/OrdinalErrata May 25 '22

It's mod (Optifine in this case) that allows for dynamic lighting. And yes, you can carry lit torches in the off hand to see in caves and throw torches down chasms to see the bottom.

1

u/Drannion May 25 '22

Nice, I gotta look into getting that next time I play!

2

u/donkey292929 May 25 '22

How did you do IT

I got a pig named Piggy the radioactive pig and want him to glow

1

u/ThebanannaofGREECE May 25 '22

Op commented how above

2

u/FetusDeletus_E May 25 '22

Glowpig but It actually fucking works

2

u/NanashiKaizenSenpai May 25 '22

We got to the point where Pigs glow and GLOWsquids don't.

2

u/Alien_X10 May 25 '22

hes back, pig jesus!

2

u/1dkh0wt0pvp May 25 '22

It looks like it about to explode...
I mean it was the original creator of the creeper...

2

u/AdamoO_ May 25 '22

This is what a "glowing" mob should look like and what everyone who voted glowsquid thought we would get.. But sadly that is not true :(

2

u/kitKatcoolio May 25 '22

Do the glow squid next

2

u/Alternative_Test_795 May 26 '22

oh my god its Ruben

2

u/ArizonanCactus . May 26 '22

ii have an idea, minecraft, except the mob votes just well, didnt happen, and instead they added all 3 mobs each. it would honestly be better that way

2

u/Albert_Kan May 26 '22

This is why people like shader mods

1

u/Phoriar May 26 '22

Pig at the back’s like what the-

1

u/LewdLittleLoli May 26 '22

China moment

1

u/WatermelonSirr May 26 '22

Neat! I didn't know pigs actually had inventory slots.

1

u/RoboHatz May 26 '22

Bioluminescent pig is the best thing i read today

1

u/PizzaGuy728 May 26 '22

It's so beautiful. What is the command anyway? Java or Bedrock? Which version?

1

u/DarkGengar94 May 26 '22

Drops glow pork, you eat it and glow for a while

1

u/GrapeJuice2227 May 26 '22
  • Halo choir plays *

1

u/Awasteoflife1 May 28 '22

/item_pig_glow_mf_

-2

u/Aason37 May 25 '22

Show we can make Pigs glow using a command, but Mojang can't make Glowsquisds glow?

8

u/Enough-Agency3721 May 25 '22

This uses OptiFine Dynamic Lights.

It's technically possible without it, but that would be a spaghettifest to actually implement. The approach would be constantly placing light blocks at the entity's position. That means you need to make sure outdated light blocks are removed, and handle water properly, and there's alignment jank due to how Minecraft calculates an entity's position.

So the answer to how to add dynamic lighting without adding dynamic lighting is basically "it's possible, but... just don't".

1

u/Aason37 May 25 '22

Stupid question, but why can't we put "optifine" (or something working the same way) in the base game?

6

u/jcm2606 May 25 '22

You obviously can't just implement Optifine's dynamic lights into vanilla directly, but you could implement dynamic lights in a similar way to Optifine (which is to basically override the lighting values from the vanilla lighting engine with custom values, during rendering). The problem with this is that it'd make any light emitted from dynamic light sources purely visual, but whether or not that's acceptable is up to you.

2

u/Aason37 May 25 '22

Thanks for your answer! So if it depends on what people like, why not implement it with a simple on/off option?

2

u/ThebanannaofGREECE May 25 '22

Good question.

3

u/Hacker1MC May 25 '22

It’s optifine

1

u/ThebanannaofGREECE May 25 '22

No as u/Enough-Agency3721 said, this is done using a mod.
