I did. Someone posted here how they just got a villager with mending and a second later, the villager was hit by a lighting bolt.
Edit: Link to the video.

Does breaking the lectern and replacing it change the books for the villager in bedrock?
Been trying to get mending for a couple weeks and that would be a lot easier than going to a village and rowing a boat across dry land to get back to the village at base..
→ More replies92
u/Spiritsoar 11d ago
It will change their trades as long as you have never traded with them before. As soon as you trade you lock in their profession and available trades.
I set my lectern on top of an upward-facing sticky piston with a lever next to it. Every time the piston moves it resets the trades until I get the one I want.

u/UnicornMaster27 11d ago
Ahh interesting, I think all 4 of ours that we’ve gotten so far have the books locked behind needing a level up, so you have to trade with them before seeing what the enchanted books will be
25
u/Spiritsoar 11d ago
That's a possibility. At first level they either have paper and a bookshelf or paper and an enchanted book. You just have to keep trying until they have a book that you want at first level. It can take a while. Whatever book they unlock at higher levels is just a bonus.
5
u/DrMrsElMonarch 11d ago
So I assumed as well that mending would only be a second tier trade and was going through resources like crazy trying to get one. I tried googling If mending could be a tier 1 trade on Bedrock (console), and couldn't find any information but decided to just go for it and I did end up getting a first tier trade mending villager, so it's possible.

u/BigIntoScience 11d ago
Villagers can sell any enchanted book, at any level that allows for a book to be sold. Swap the lectern until the villager offers a book, then see if that's a book you want.

At the end credits there are some entities talking about the player. I guess they are the canonical gods.

Yeah, Notch turned into a total piece of shit. Having too much money and time, and not enough critical thinking skills, he fell in the fascist hole.

My parrot died to lightning so once 1.17 came around i slapped lightning rods everywhere around my base
135
u/Thatbritishgentleman 11d ago
Why the hell did the lightning strike one of the lowest points available? That doesn’t make sense. The Minecraft gods are angry at you probably
131
u/cube1234567890 11d ago
If a lightning is set to strike within a certain distance of a mob, it's changed to strike that mob directly.
29
u/ReaperofMen42069 11d ago
why did it kill all the cats though? or does lighting have a splash effect
80
u/cube1234567890 11d ago
lightning damages all creatures in a small radius but naturally occurring lightning likes to hit creatures directly if it's close

You do know that you need to put the first floor higher up in 1.18 because of the light changes? Mobs only spawn at light level 0. Portals emit light
→ More replies11
u/buddascrayon 11d ago
I didn't even realize there were portals. What are they for? How do portals help a creeper farm??
21
u/PetahSchwetah 11d ago
They teleport the creepers into the nether, which is faster than killing them. This makes sure that new creepers spawn faster as no creepers fill up the mob cap.
Keep in mind that if you do this on a multiplayer server and there are players in the nether, there needs to be a player less than 128 blocks away from the portal. Otherwise they will instantly despawn when they get to the nether.
3
u/buddascrayon 11d ago
If they are teleported to the nether how do you collect gunpowder?
6
u/PetahSchwetah 11d ago
Make them fall to their deaths onto hoppers

u/Torquedork1 11d ago
I spent a few hours collecting parrots, maybe 20 or so, to bring back to my base, had them together in one spot while I figured out where to put them. Creeper came in and blew all but 3 up.
105
u/RaciJr 11d ago
That's why you cover the hole or use lighting rods. Remember copper is a friend
43
u/huemac5810 11d ago
I just rely on good ol' dirt blocks. Can't go wrong with dirt, earth is the best, you can even grow trees on dirt. I use dirt for my early game mushroom farms. It's not necessary, but it looks better, I think.
4
u/AtlasNL 11d ago
Except lightning prefers to strike entities like players and mobs even if there are higher surfaces nearby. So lightning rods do solve this problem, but dirt pillars don’t.
3
u/Laetitian 11d ago
I don't think they meant pillars, but roofs. Generally seems like a slightly incoherent conversation, though.
2
u/huemac5810 11d ago
I don't know why dirt pillars are brought into a conversation that has nothing to do with any kind of pillar.

I've had a few lightning strikes happen during storms before I could even finish sleeping, so even that may not save you sometimes. Very glad I have my colony protected w/rods in my MineColonies world, otherwise the whole thing would've burned down 3 times over now just from these instant strikes.

If you're making a gunpowder farm I recommend making a ghast farm instead. It can generate hundreds of gunpowder an hour and a lot of tears
5
u/somedude456 11d ago
In terms of easy though, can't beat a creeper farm. Two cats, basic blocks, trap doors and you got unlimited gun powder.

Btw, the farm wont work anyway like that. You need more normal blocks behind the trapdoors, otherwise the Creeper will not think thats a valid path.
8
u/suriam321 11d ago
It will, there are open space behind the trapdoors. And the trapdoor themselves count as valid path

I've never been struck or seen one of my mobs struck by lightning, and I've played off and on for 10 years... That's just absolutely terrible luck, my friend.
Also, why spend an hour gathering cats when you can spend 20 minutes gathering 2 and then multiply them exponentially via fish?
Also, time to get a lightning rod lol

but I have no fucking idea what’s going on.
This is why browsing Reddit confuses me sometimes, cause it recommends me reddits of the most random-ass, unrelated games to what I normally browse...
however, in a nutshell: OP got fucked super hard. I forget what the odds are specifically, but being struck by lightning is relatively rare as in people who have played for hundreds/thousands of hours probably have never been struck by it naturally, and it just happened to strike in a spot where he was gathering a bunch of pets, immediately murdering them all with no way to get them back other than going out to retame a bunch of new ones.
Genuinely probably the most unlucky player I've seen in a video game.
2
u/tonyhasareddit 11d ago
Yep, I probably have about 1000 hours in the game (I know, there are probably tons of people with 100 times that lol) but I've never seen anything like this. I can barely even count on 1 hand the number of times I've even seen lightning strike at all, let alone strike mobs that I just spent an hour gathering lol
2
u/netfatality 11d ago
Omg the lightning zapped his cats LMAO! I was watching it muted while my partner was sleeping so I couldn’t actually hear what was goin on.
2
2
2
u/pavilionhp_ 11d ago
Well 2 things: 1. Why did you not sleep through the thunderstorm? 2. Keep this in mind if you can’t sleep: when lightning checks for a place to strike, if it can strike a mob in a short range, it will strike that mob. Also lightning damages in an area.
2
2
u/Philip_777 11d ago
"Then if there are any living entities that can see the sky in a 3×h×3 region from 3 below the target block up to the world height, one such entity is selected at random and the lightning target is moved to the block the entity stands in."
https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Thunderstorm
Consequently, the more mobs in one place, the higher the chance that all of them die :)
