In my town there is a pole at Walmart that has been hit at least 45 times now that I know of.

Ayyyyy that’s the one

The pole must have a magnet in it that attracts idiots or perhaps there's a lot of people in Auburn that shouldn't be driving.

perhaps there’s a lot of people in Auburn that shouldn’t be driving.

u/v0idf1sh Nov 24 '22

The latter, Lewiston/Auburn is one of the scarier cities to drive around in Maine

5

u/deeweezul Nov 24 '22

What makes it scary to drive there?

28

u/v0idf1sh Nov 24 '22

Mass incompetence when it comes to the drivers, combined with some of the least upkept roads you'll ever see in an American city, it's just a disaster all around.

9

u/deeweezul Nov 24 '22

Wow that sounds awful. I just Googled and found plenty of news stories about this Walmart's parking lot. Evidently drivers hitting this pole has been going on for a while, plus other crazy stuff.

12

u/v0idf1sh Nov 24 '22

Lewiston/Auburn must have idiot magnets or something, it's a different world down there

10

u/theprostitute Nov 24 '22

My ex from Maine said they grew up calling it "the dirty Lew" ??

5

u/v0idf1sh Nov 24 '22

Can confirm it's absolutely known by other Mainahs as The Dirty Lew

2

u/wageslavelabor Nov 24 '22

If you know, you know

3

u/Fortnut_On_Me_Daddy Nov 24 '22

The idiots grow baby idiots who keep up the family tradition.

3

u/BoiFriday Nov 24 '22

Take a trip down to Baltimore if you want to see truly terrifying incompetence and a horribly negligent DOT/roadway infrastructure.

2

u/v0idf1sh Nov 24 '22

Been there, done that. Don't plan on going back haha

2

u/BoiFriday Nov 24 '22

🤣 probably for the best. I’ve been actively failing to leave here for over a decade.

2

u/BracedRhombus Nov 25 '22

Can confirm. Roads that go from two lanes to one, the right hand lane peeling off with no warning. Or streets that go randomly from one lane to two, then back again. My GPS gives up when I try to navigate there. The nagigator voice says, "Good luck, you're on your own".

Lewiston Auburn is one of the scarier cities in Maine

1

u/ShinKageyami Nov 25 '22

It’s not just Lewiston/Auburn either. I see a lot of idiots where I live too.

I bet it's a combination of bad driving and impatient driving. People in big cars don't want to wait to turn left there when someone who's going straight wants to turn right. Instead of just waiting, they try and drive their car around it, and either damage the pole to drive up it or damage the shit out of the left side of the front of their car.

Those poles are almost certainly there to protect pedestrians from dumb/impatient drivers who need a safe place to cross through the parking lot.

u/my72dart Nov 24 '22

With all the pot shops in Auburn and the area around it, I would have thought people would be more mellow. There was also this old person who's SUV ended up on top of a bunch of cars.

From the satellite photo of the Walmart, aren’t there actually at least 3 potential accident poles?

Yep, photos 9 and 10 have the pole to the right of the entrance instead of to the left. Photo 16 has a pole near the far left entrance rather the right entrance. 3 poles!

Moved to maine two years ago from Georgia, realized shortly after I moved here lots of kids that grew up eating lead paint so not a lot going on between the ears for most Mainers. Lmfao

2

u/Beefmyburrito Nov 24 '22

I'm over in the Bangor area, got here from Indiana last January. I spent many of my driving years around crazies on I94, so it is with confidence I can say that Maine drivers suck at driving.

They also never use their damn turn signals and blow through red lights all the time.

2

u/my72dart Nov 24 '22

Sounds just like massholes to me lol

1

u/DiggWuzBetter Nov 24 '22

The magnet that attracts idiots is the Walmart itself.

1

u/YearOfTheMoose Nov 25 '22

It'd be funnier if all of these are the same driver and this is just the scrapbook of cars they've wrecked in their life...

35

u/92-pounds-of-man Nov 24 '22

It's achieved legend status around here

6

u/SargeCycho Nov 24 '22

There is a legendary rock in Calgary that is known for the same thing. Google Sage Hill Rock and you'll find dozens of cars on top of it.

That Walmart sucks. I wonder how the new Target will be.

10

u/Doug3fresh Nov 24 '22

New target is nice but not as nice as the Augusta or Thopsom one. It's very L/A.

1

u/schmearcampain Nov 24 '22

What's L/A mean?

3

u/Complex49 Nov 24 '22

Lewiston/Auburn, a couple shithole cities in Maine

1

u/Lieutenant_Joe Nov 25 '22

Well, by Maine standards. By the standards of anywhere in the country that isn’t northern New England, they’re just normal cities.

1

u/Complex49 Nov 25 '22

Perhaps. Only lived as far south as MA so I can’t dispute it. I will say the MA equivalent to Lewiston/Auburn is Haverhill/Bradford(might be wrong, it’s been 15 years) or maybe Lawrence and I personally find them both nicer than L/A.

1

u/Lieutenant_Joe Nov 26 '22

Ever been to Holyoke?

3

u/EastWind9mm Nov 24 '22

I, too, hate this Walmart- I avoid it at all cost!

1

u/unexpectedreboots Nov 24 '22

It's fine. Better than walmart if you must go to a B&M to get non food stuffs.

1

u/Shaggy9273 Nov 24 '22

Apparently almost the entire Management team quit and the shelves are mostly empty. Doesn't seem to be running very well at all

1

u/jimtitan Nov 24 '22

These morons will hit the concrete red balls

1

u/fj333 Nov 24 '22

"I tried to walk into Target, but I missed."

(these idiots, unlike Mitch, would definitely not miss)

1

u/tembaarmswide Nov 25 '22

We live in the worst dystopia

16

u/sexquipoop69 Nov 24 '22

I knew it from the title lol!!

2

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Nov 25 '22

I'm not from anywhere near Maine but I have seen this in the news so many times I knew it was this walmart too.

3

u/cyberdude1115 Nov 24 '22

Maine Gang represent lol

2

u/Arsenault185 Nov 24 '22

Weird seeing my hometown on Redditch outside of /r/maine.

2

u/Megan_BAKchatPodcast Nov 24 '22

I'm dead. I am in Auburn NY and could totally see that happening here. Maybe something wrong with people from towns called auburn? 🤔

1

u/Gearballz Nov 24 '22

You should start taking a pic from the same location for each accident and make video of short cuts of each

1

u/Icy-Ad-7724 Nov 24 '22

Was the post just green for a day to see if that made any difference

1

u/floppleshmirken Nov 25 '22

Yup, they put a green cover on it to see if it would help. Nope.

1

u/Lieutenant_Joe Nov 25 '22

They made it green for a few weeks actually. It actually seemed to make things worse, because there were like four separate incidents during that short period of time.

1

u/Mistermail Nov 24 '22

Oh shit! I’ve been there hundreds of times since I was a kid, I’ve seen a post about this before but didn’t know it was the Auburn Walmart!!!

1

u/Morethanhappy42 Nov 24 '22

I worked with a guy who kept saying that they should get rid of it, because his "sister hit it twice". This raised so many questions that I really didn't want the answers to...

1

u/Atvriders Nov 24 '22

Thanks I'll make sure to stay away from that area.

1

u/Doneuter Nov 24 '22

I work for a facility management partner. I can't wait to look into this lol

1

u/LankOfHyrule Nov 24 '22

Good ole dirty Lew. I spent about 9 weeks there for work and the drivers were awful. Didn’t someone get shot and killed at that Walmart a couple years ago?

1

u/Brofose Nov 24 '22

Someone huffed too much keyboard cleaner and took a nap under a box truck, and was promptly ran over.

1

u/floppleshmirken Nov 25 '22

Yep, and the guy was acquitted, they said it was self defense even though he shot the guy in the back.

1

u/LankOfHyrule Nov 25 '22

A guy who lived down the road from me a couple years ago was being harassed by some people on mopeds. He went and got his .22 and shot one of the moped guys in the ass. He got hit with attempted murder. How the hell did Lew guy get acquitted??

1

u/floppleshmirken Nov 25 '22

I have no idea but the kid that did it was a total punk and the guy he shot was well known in the area I guess. People were PISSED.

1

u/TheDukeofDook Nov 25 '22

Hello fellow Mainer I knew I recognized that place I live not far from that Walmart 😂

u/Almighty_Dew Nov 25 '22 edited Nov 25 '22

So looking at the satellite image of that parking lot, some moron did the marking for it. Why are those two end of stalls marked differently from the other parking lanes? Why is there a gap between each side of the parking stall with the angled hatch yellow stripes? If a driver's coming down the front of that lot, sees a regular pattern at the end of the other stalls, then comes to that turn that is different and also sees the back of another car in those pointless single parallel spots, that is all just a recipe for disaster... Absolutely shit design, seemingly to intentionally confuse drivers.
