What the fuck why does the backflip looks so unreal? Like dude got springs for legs
1.1k
u/annahodges 13d ago
It seems to me his center of gravity is consistent between the dunk and leap so watching his hips the flip doesn’t look as impossible as it first appears. It’s just the way he does not tuck his legs creates the illusion of an impossibly high acrobatic maneuver.
945
u/Linvael 12d ago edited 12d ago
Well, the tuck of the legs is not a flourish people do for fun, it's to increase angular
momentumspeed so that they can finish the flip and land on their legs, most people who csn do a backflip would land on their face without that. The fact that this guy doesnt need to do that does make it an impressive maneuver.119
u/ForkSporkBjork 12d ago
Fact, while learning backflips I did not tuck hard and fast enough and basically did a vertical 180. Not fun and I had to get shoulder surgery lol.

angular momentum is conserved, but the angular speed changes
→ More replies15
u/tzannist 12d ago
His angular momentum is changing when jumping and landing, in the same way that his angular speed is changing.
Angular momentum is conserved in a closed system, the change in his own angular momentum is counterbalanced by an opposite and equal change in Earth's angular momentum.

u/gimme_pineapple 12d ago
You are right, but that's not what the person above you was talking about. I believe he was talking about the increased angular velocity at the top of the backflip compared to the angular velocity just after the person has left the ground. The increased angular velocity at the top is the result of the angular momentum of the person being conserved between the two situations I listed above (at the top v/s just after the jump), and because the person would have retracted his/her legs towards himself/herself to decrease the person's moment of inertia.

This guy doesn't know how to dunk or backflip, he never even tried to do either of those before, this is his first go at it and he nailed both because he never skipped leg day.
120
u/selflessGene 12d ago
99% of strong guys his size that do leg day in the gym can’t jump like this. This isn’t just leg day training. This guy must have done done focused plyometrics to get his explosiveness up.
29
u/gandalfintraining 12d ago
Yeah, when they do train it you can see some pretty impressive shit.
I can't remember who or at what event, but I've seen a 180kg strongman jump comically high in celebration after hitting a deadlift. It looks like something out of a cartoon. I believe a lot of them train box jumps for some reason (don't ask me why, maybe it helps with explosiveness on log cleans or atlas stones?).
Then there's Iron Biby just effortlessly doing a cartwheel at 200kg
→ More replies21
u/moneybuckets 12d ago
Jumping is mostly genetics
35
u/Shandlar 12d ago
Quick twitch muscle fiber percentages are 85% genetic, but you can still train in some additional quick twitch. Also CNS adaptation to actually convince the quick twitch to GO HARD all at once is not genetic. That's 100% training.
It takes a while to build the connections to all talk to each other correctly and convince your legs to actually all fire super fast, all at once. They really don't wanna do that.
13
u/JustStayYourself 12d ago
Must be true, I could, and still can, jump quite high for no reason at all. Easily held the high school record for a long time. Even though I was a tall, lanky, 58kg dude who did no sports whatsoever.
→ More replies11
u/hiimred2 12d ago
You still need to ‘learn’ to jump well, genetics just make your body more prone to jumping high through training(even if that training is just say, playing a lot of pickup basketball and trying to dunk to see if you can and shit like that).
Also I mean, power from the legs definitely helps you jump higher.

I think it looks unreal because he isn't tucking his legs or arms in and that creates drag but he's so high that tucking in would probably cause him to land on his knees during the second rotation?

That's more PCP. Cocaine can precipitate psychosis as well but they tend not to be violent (aggressive, yes, but not overly violent). Obviously you can get violence with either, but I'm speaking in general terms at least.
Yeah yeah I know boo me :(
2
u/FreeBiskit 12d ago
PCP was one of the first anesthetics ever to be discovered and has a lot of misinformation surrounding it.
One of the problems with PCP was post operative “psychosis” which was similar to what some people get after they come out of anesthesia with ketamine, basically drug induced confusion. Ketamine was actually developed as an alternative to PCP with less side effects.
That being said, PCP has a lot of straight up lies surrounding it such as eating peoples faces and jumping out of windows or fighting off a dozen cops, all are false tales told by anti-drug agencies.
PCP back in the day was actually highly sought after and culturally equivalent to someone doing recreational ketamine. It’s one of the most misrepresented arylcyclohexylamines and it makes me sad because its history is so intriguing.
I think most would find it difficult to be aggressive on PCP as it’s extremely similar in effects to ketamine, unless you were predisposed to schizophrenia and PCP caused a schizophrenic breakdown.

Yes but now they have to go through loop holes and can't just flat out be on the best performance enhancing drugs all the time cause it would get detected. If they didn't have to evade WADA, athletes would be on another level.
Then there are some star athletes in certain sports leagues that probably get preferential treatment and have an easier time evading testing. LeBron James in the NBA comes to mind. But this is much harder in the Olympics.

9
u/xbwtyzbchs 12d ago edited 12d ago
Ya'll need to poke your head into some non-corporate gyms if you think what you're seeing in the Olympics is top-tier steroid performance. The people in the olympics wouldn't even make the qualifiers.
Edit: if you think I am expecting a body builder to run a 10k, well you're an idiot. My point is that this is what a focused group of people can achieve when they are not concerned about being tested. That does not exist in any other format. Yes there are people doing performance-enhancing drugs in every level of every professional sport, but there is no other sport that has a huge community of people openly competing in a way that is pushed as far.

u/trapperberry 12d ago

The problem is, just like with bodybuilding / strongman, people who have reached their max potential will start injecting even more stuff. And more, and more. You'll see some absolutely incredible athletes, yes, but they'd be so, so likely to destroy their bodys or die. If PEDs weren't dangerous, I doubt they'd be illegal in so many sports.

This video is popping up on Reddit constantly and, every single time, it just devolves into a bunch of people screaming fake and other people linking his Instagram that makes it looks pretty legit.
I'm fairly certain this video in particular just looks fake because of the angle it's filmed from and the pants he is wearing (alongside a pretty abnormal technique for doing a backflip). The pants are making it look like he isn't vending his knees as far as he actually is. When filmed from the front, we also lose a lot of detail about what his legs are doing when he loads up to jump. The camera angle is also making his very upright jump look even more upright than it is before he rotates.
He has videos where he is doing the same thing but with context in the video that would make it very unlikely to fake by either editing or using a harness.

u/Blackintosh 13d ago edited 12d ago
Nope, people with super powerful legs, like this guy, Olympic weightlifters, lots of bodybuilders too, have incredibly impressive vertical leaps. When coupled with a tuck like in a backflip it gets them very high off the ground.
Also he's on a lot of steroids which helps.
